Lights and dark areas

(Lock Ness Monster) #1

im having problems with lights, it either says i have a leak, or when i go in game it wont show no light, also how do u make areas darker

(Ifurita) #2

Silly question. Did you do a -light compile?

(Lock Ness Monster) #3

no, i didnt know u had to do one though, but how do u make an area darker so the light would show more, like how it is in the temple level inside, u know where its really dark, how do u get it like that

(Ifurita) #4

see Silly question, you have to do a light compile

(Lock Ness Monster) #5

i know i just figured out that it makes ur whole level dark when u do that and only lights the areas with a light, im still a noob lol, give me a break, that was the first time i tried that.

My train scared the crap out of me when it came out of the darkness lol

(Lock Ness Monster) #6

well i just fucktified my map if that is a word, how do u get the sky box to show liek normal?

(The Wanderer) #7

On a side note, please don’t use temple as your lighting guide. That map has quite possibly the worst lighting I’ve seen on any map.

(Lock Ness Monster) #8

im talking about inside when i used that as an example, u know how it was dark, im not talking about its sky box. im just asking how do u get it to normal, now that i started using lights its to dark to see my sky box, what do i do

(WeblionX) #9

It means your skybox isn’t a correct texture. You have to use one with a working shader for the sky to give off light. Also, to make light indoors, you can use the ‘light’ entities.

(Lock Ness Monster) #10

i found that out about the inside thing, but i am trying to make a level that envolves space and i was only able to find one, what can i do now that the one i have isnt a working shader, i need a space type skybox

(nUllSkillZ) #11

sd_batterysky is working.

(Orange) #12

Space sounds good for trickjumping, or any other kind of creative idea.
You can also lower or gravity a bit, although I’d advise you to stay calm when doing this 'cause I’ve seen many weird things happen with low gravity.

Anyway, I remember I read some tutorial for making a space skybox for Quake but it should be the same so I’ll just have a quick search and edit this.

Edit:
I did more than a Quick search and I couldn’t find that tutorial.
Anyway, I think it was a bit outdated so I’ll just tell you what I suggest you to do and you’ll tell me if you need more details.

First, you need six black 8x8 TGAs named X_up, X_dn, X_lf, X_rt, X_ft, X_bk (replace X with sky or anything you want, all six files should end with .tga)
Now, if you want to create the feeling of motion, you’ll need to create 2-3 stars texture and then blend them to your sky shader and add different scroll rates to each one.
If you don’t want to create the feeling of motion, you can create one stars texture but make sure you have stars in different sizes (far and near stars).
You may also find some space images (with galaxies and stuff) and make them seamless somehow and then also blend them or use them as your envelope.

ok thanks, i was thinking abotu low gravity, but im making a building and i want it to have normal gravity,is there a way where i can have certain areas with low gravity and make it where when a person spends to much time outside he starts losing health like all those other games do when ur oxygen hits zero

Edit: also can someone tell me the difference in a light and a light juinor?

(Orange) #14

I really don’t know about the low gravity areas, but I think you can use scripting to do the oxygen thingy.
Maybe create some brushes with nodraw water shader and that would let players float around and get choked when they run out of oxy.

From my understanding of their descriptions, light is a normal light and lightJunior only lights dynamic models (like the player model, guns, misc_gamemodel, etc…)

(Lock Ness Monster) #15

ok, the water thing is a good idea, but i dont want people floating like swiming, i want them to be able to run, and the scripting thing, i have no clue about that, im still a newbie at scripting things so i wouldnt know the slightest thing on how to do that.

about that thing for making a space sky box thing, did u find the tutorial u was talking about?

(Orange) #16

See the edited section in my first post…

(Lock Ness Monster) #17

im completlely lost about all that, never heard anything close to that before, sorry, i need alot more detail lol

(Orange) #18

Ok, I’ll tell you what, I’m pretty tired now and I know that if I’ll start explaining this to you now you’ll have some hard time trying to figure out what I want from you.
Tommorow I’ll probably won’t have much time also because I have to go over about half geometry book…
So if someone else would have time and knows what I’m talking about or have an alternative I hope he’ll help.
Whenever I’ll have time I’ll see if you worked it out yet and if not I’ll explain everything to you.
In the meantime, just use sd_batterysky or any other working sky shader and keep working on other things in your map.

(Orange) #19

Well, I promised I’ll help when I’ll have time and now I have time, but, I don’t know what software you have on your machine and how familiar you are with it, so you have 2 options:

  1. I’ll write you a step-by-step tutorial, assuming you have Photoshop or have other software and you know you would be able to get a similar result or just use my basis to make whatever you want.
  2. Assuming you don’t have the required software, I can do it for you and you’ll tell me if you’re happy with it or not and I’ll try to make it as close as I can to your request.
If you choose this option, I’ll have to now what effect exactly you want (travel in space, far galaxies, purple-blue space games skies, etc…)

It’s all up to you…

BTW:
I can also introduce you the options The Matrix way… (blue and red pills)

(Lock Ness Monster) #20

lol, well i would love the matrix way, but i dont want to fight no agent smiths and all, so that one is out lol, i do have photoshop CS or soemthing like that, but i have no clue how to work it, if u could explain to me the basics i would perfer that so i could make my own textures
