Lightmap terrain under vertex lighting

This is basically the same problem as discussed in this thread

except that when dealing with terrain I’ve found that the :q3map solution causes grey squares.

Lightmap terrain is great, but when viewing it in vertex lit mode it comes out far too bright. Some pics here to show what I mean, using the same compile:

Is there any way to dull it down in vertex mode while leaving the lightmap version relatively untouched?
