Lighting

(retredmadcat) #1

hey

does anybody have any tutorials / tips or anything for lighting maps?

i’ve been trying it for some time today and it just wont work like i see it in normal (indoor) maps…

i made a light entity, tried some different light values, compiled it with i believe 5 different options so far, and i always get a very fake effect…
it seems the light has no fall off distance or smth… the last time i tried, i had a circle of 100% light on the floor, and it went into total darkness within 3 cm’s…

with the last compile option in the list i got some difference, with some 50% lighting on the walls, but still complete darkness in the corners of the room…

i just dont know how to make lights, cant find anything usefull on them…

Tried a light emitting texture allready? These can do wonders for simple abmience lighting.

no i havent… what is it?

but i found out about ambient and _minlight keys in worldspawn now, and it worked how i wanted
i now have equal (rather dark) lighting everywhere and by putting a light entity it gets brighter at that spot

I believe they are in the “lights” texture folder.
But your maps works anyway.

thnx for that! it helped me alot!

but now i have another problem :S
i seem to have a lot of random (mostly) square shadows all over the place :S

does someone know what can cause this problem? there are one or two rooms with correct shading and lighting… but the rest is messed up, there are light spots 3 m away from the actual light, and the ceiling is pitch black etc…

Picture(s)?

make sure ur light entity isnt halfway thru a brush

damnit, the problems are getting worse
i now have not only the lighting problem, but when i made the pk3 file and tested it, i got almost ALL textures as black/yellow (which im pretty sure means that they couldnt be found)… this wouldnt be weird if it were some selfmade textures orso, but there are 2 things which are just weird :S

  1. I only use standard textures which can be found in pak0.pk3
  2. At some places, the exact same texture CAN be seen…

i have one room, where the ceiling and floor and walls are all textures/battery_wall/wall_m03 (or smth) and in the game the floor shows up as the right texture and the rest is black and yellow :S:S

and about the lighting, ill take some pics later

Are you using a clean ET installation for mapping or are there tons of custom pk3 in your etmain folder?

(retredmadcat) #11

i have 3 ET installs on my pc, but im not sure what you mean by “are you using a clean install for mapping” … i use gtk radiant, not ET lol :stuck_out_tongue: i guess you mean where i save .map files and where gtk places the compiled bsp files etc? then yes i have tons of custom pk3’s there :moo:

you think i should save the .map file in a clean install of ET and compile it there too?

(kamikazee) #12

Yes, so GTKRadiant can’t use custom textures from those pk3’s. (So make sure your GTKRadiant uses that clean install of ET to open the textures)

(So make sure your GTKRadiant uses that clean install of ET to open the textures)

how do i do that? you mean i must select the clean ET install directory somewhere? cos i think it takes default… (program files/wolfenstein et/ …) but thats not my clean install

IIRC you can set this if you go to the File menu -> Project settings.

Eventually, make a copy of your current ET dir and use that as a gaming copy.
Then you can clean out your original ET folder (program files/wolfenstein et/ …) by removing all pk3’s except mp_bin.pk3, all the pak…pk3’s and your own.
Allso, all mod folders are then copied to your gaming copy and can go too, to save space.

Once you’re using a clean install, you can only select the official textures and your custom ones. That way, you normally won’t be surprised by missing textures. Still, passing it to someone else with a clean install could help to find textures not included in your pk3.
