Let's Talk About Shotguns...
multiplier based DMG would make shotguns even more inconsistent.
Now you hit 30, now you hit 50, now you hit 70. with the same range, and almost same shots.
Fixed spread with some of the tweaking mentioned by szaklot would make it consistently more aim skill reflective. If you’re always aiming perfectly, then you get max damage. Otherwise you won’t be able to get away with lucky chip shots the same as any other weapon. Skill and shotgun in the same sentence might actually not be a joke at that point.

try out quakelive shotgun. it is a crazy good weapon in terms of balance and is very situational.
the skill is to know the situations and also to not be bad-aimer.

but in terms of mechanics its is crystal clear.

“The Shotgun fires 20 pellets in two rings (10 in each). The inner ring deals 7 damage per pellet while the outer deals 4 damage per pellet, for a max of 110 damage, which is essentially point-blank range.”

if by nice you mean suicide machine…

4 shots for a fragger and thunder at point blank?
you would be dead before you shoot the third.

I really need to ask,

What is SOOOO bad with lucky chip shots?
Its not like from time to time we get lucky shots with the other weapons right?

I know I have killed a fair few people I was not even aiming at like that…

There’s not enough difference between something like a direct nade/shotgun hit and one that’s kinda close. I’m talking about shots that would result in no damage with any other weapon, but because of the way these weapons work you still deal enough damage for it to matter.

Perhaps its not such a bad thing that the light merc is ‘hard’ countered by the heavy? If you are smart about the engagement, you can try to prolong it enough to get sth like 5 shots out. And this does not include the considered increase in RoF
