Leaf with too many portals

I couldn’t do -vis coz i had error: max map visability expended so i decided to change many structural brushes to detail.
Now i can’t do -vis coz i have another error: Leaf with too many portals

snipp snipp from that page:

Q.

Leaf has too many portals

A. Generally means that you have a very complicated brush someplace probably with a lot of faces and is far too irregular and complex so the map wont compile so you need to make it less complex.

think brush cleanup should do the trick

thx,
nice site btw

edit: oops. maybe i should write how to do clean up for that ones that don’t know… :stuck_out_tongue:

In radiant: Plugins -> bobtoolz -> brush cleanup
after few seconds radiant will show all bad brushes :stuck_out_tongue:

:moo:

The brush cleanup is an idea, but wont necessarily solve your problem.

The max leafs occurs when you have a STRUCTURAL brush that has too many sides. You can easily reproduce that error with a structural brush that you make arbitrary sided and give it 12 sides or something.

So the real solution to your problem is: to find the brush that is too complicated and make it detail.
You wrote you made some brushes detail, but I hope that you know what u are doing there. A good rule for structural brushes is: they should only be used for walls/roof/floor, and have not more than 6 sides.

not necessarily a single brush or even a bad brush. my point being that i quickly made a small map after seeing something in a movie(just for the testing of it). all it was is a large roundish room with stairs and platforms against the wall. the thing is there were alot of stairs, each repeated in the same position about 256 units above the copy.

as long as they’re detail, it’s fine. but if they are all structural the leaf with too many portals error pops up. these were just plain rectangular brushes, nothing fancy. maybe it’s because half of them were rotated instead of built on the grid(i was just testing the visuals so i didn’t care about proper building technique for this instance).

well cleanup solved the problem
but thx for additional info anyway

k sorry to bring up an old topic but i am having a similar problem… I believe that i have narrowed down which brushes need to be made detail… but the ones that are more complicated will not convert from structural to detail. I know that they are not changin cause i can still see them w/ the filters either way (show detail/hide detail) so i know that some of the brushes are being converted to the detail. Do i need to delete all of these and start over to make em details? any help will be appreciated. maybe it is just a glitch in my radiant

(Malicious Mushroom) #8

can anyone tell me why i cannot make these brushes detail???

(kamikazee) #9

Maybe there are cloned brushes at that position.
Filter detail out. Now try to select those you can’t make detail and press H to hide them. If there are still some brushes, select those as well and press H again.
If there are no longer brushes visible which should have been detail, toggle detail filtering to off. If brushes appear where you would have hidden them, you are sure that you are suffering from two or more brushes in the same position. To remove them, enable detail filtering once again, press SHIFT+H to unhide all and delete those doubles.

(Malicious Mushroom) #10

nope… nothin hidden… it is only the complicated brushes that i cannot make into detail… like a many sided column… or a group of brushes that are curved over a window for trim.

this is an example of one of the brushes that i am attemtping to convert to detail w/ no luck… btw i also re-installed radiant (no change)

(kamikazee) #11

Is this a 20-sides brush or a patch? In the latter case, patches are allways detail at compile time.

(Malicious Mushroom) #12

well as far as i know they are all brushes… i am workin on this map as a collaboration w/ someone else. I asked and they said it was definetly a brush… so now i am back to square one. :frowning:

(CyburK) #13

as kamikazee said patches, curves and caps are detail at compile time. but they wont be hidden with show/hide detail. so dont worry if they dont disappear. if you dont get any error messages everything should be alright. :chef:

greetings

kk well i will continue to de-bug this map… thanx for the help. If i ever figure out excactly what is goin on i will post it. I believe that it may have to do w/ some very messy brushwork. When i get it all cleaned up hopefully it all works out
