Launcher App (Disable P2P)

(SockDog) #1

Was discussing this only the other day with a friend. There should be an option to disable the P2P sharing in the launcher app. I know you can limit it to 1KB/sec but some people may feel they are being forced to share what might be their limited data allowance without permission.

Doesnt Pause disable it?

Perhaps, I’m assuming that also pauses downloads/updates though. Maybe there just needs to be some clarity given to the option.

Again, just being the devil’s advocate here. I understand why P2P is important, hell I leave my launcher running so I can help seed new downloads. Other however may feel annoyed if they have no option or it’s not clear, no reason to piss off even a handful of people if it can be avoided.

I thought this seeding in the launcher was only for the pre-alpha and would be removed in the actual beta / RC?
Dunno how I got that and if it’s true, but I didn’t expect that you would be forced to upload on the real game.

I’m putting words into mouths here but I believe it will be in the final product mainly because it will offset the bandwidth costs for SD if players are P2Ping a lot of the data. This is something I totally understand and is a good idea IMO as it means a resilient method of downloading that won’t get hammered on each update.

So the company I worked for tried something like this, and not having an option to disable P2P sent so much rage throughout the annals of humanity, I was convinced 2012 was a for real End of the World Event.

The quick and dirty of it is, some people are limited on Upload, otherwise they’re charged many moneys… it goes beyond convenience sometimes.

I’m 100% for the team getting the game out as efficiently as possible, but not allowing a customer to opt out is bad news bears…

22 beers…

It doesn’t upload when the launcher isn’t running, or if the game is running, so there is a way to disable uploads if necessary.

Pausing does stop all update-related network traffic, but you’ll need un-pause when an update comes out.
P2P use is something we’re keeping an eye on, but for now it’s the only way to keep up-to-date.

Edit: You can limit your upload, but of course that will also slow down your downloads as well.

in Belgium students have a 10gb limit and various limits for the rest of the country atm I’m on 100gb, so not that big of a problem for me.

i think its perfectly acceptable to have peer to peer - just display how much data is being transferred and leave an option to pause it or shut it off? i dont see the problem if its a couple of mb
