Laptops and Level Mapping

Okay so I have been working on Radient’s level editor for ET on my desktop PC but I would like to do this at my job.

My question is, is there a laptop that can support this type of software? I understand the sky is probably the limit, but what would be an entry level laptop I could get since I kinda don’t want to focus alot of my money on one.

The main problem is that radiant is not friendly to non-mainstream video cards. Anything with an embedded radeon or geforce card should be OK, while anything else is more likely to have problems. I’d say a 1ghz or better cpu and 512 megs or more of RAM should be fine. You could work with less, but it would be painful on any decent size map.

I use to use my acer travel mate 240. It worked ok. It was not very smooth though.

Thanks for all the help, especially about the graphic card problems.

Just one more thing…I do you think a GeForce 2 - 16MB will suffice. i only ask cause there doesn’t seem to be much documentation included in the editor.

Also if you have documentation that was complied after the map editor release I would love to get my hands on it. I have never done moding before outside of 3d Studio and original wads for doom.

Anything with decent opengl support should work, and that pretty much includes every nvidia card from the Riva TNT on up. (when I started mapping for RTCW, I used a celeron 300 and a TNT1, which was painfully slow, but not impossible). A Geforce2 should be OK, but you will probably want to keep cubic clipping on most of the time, and use low texture detail in the editor. If you want to work on really big complex maps, you will probably find it quite painful.

There isn’t any official documentation that doesn’t come with the editor. However, there are a lot of good resources on the net, I’d suggest checking the sticky threads at the top of this forum.

edit:
sock did do an update of the Level Designers Reference that comes with the editor. You can find it here: http://www.planetquake.com/simland/ldr1_1/default.htm

I still manage to map occasionally on a p3 450Mhz 16mbTNT 310Mb ram and its not too bad (except for compiling light with big maps). So if you can get something better than that you should be right.
