Kira laser rework anyone?

Right now the way the laser is called in is really annoying: when you start calling in the laser, it starts a timer, which resets if you take damage or if your crosshair moves to a different surface. This means that if the ground is flat you can move your cursor halfway across the map while strafing and jumping just to call the laser right onto someone’s face, and if the ground is bumpy (railroad tracks for example) or if there is beams across the ceiling (like in underground), you have to stand completely still or it’ll reset.

Why do we simply not make it so that rather than resetting if you move your cursor to another surface, the laser marker will appear wherever you first press down the button and follow your cursor exactly the same way the laser would?

Not sure if the reset when taking damage would still be needed as damaging kira wouldn’t be the only way to not get a laser to the face (well besides running across railroad tracks, or even going near railroad tracks, seriously those things suck)

…I think it’s completely fine right now… It’s just that people don’t pay attention and experienced Kiras know how to manipulate their lasers and start them behind enemies and have them move forward so they don’t see.

I’m not really commenting on the balance of the laser itself, just spawning the laser: the timer won’t reset as long as you’re on flat ground no matter how far you move your cursor, but it often resets if you accidentally move your cursor over even a tiny bump

If the speed nerf gets reverted I’m happy.

Ah, those were the days when you could target the laser across the map and it sped up as it went along. Now it just kinda plods along.

Yeah, it’s kind of sad.
If you spawn it behind enemies with the surprise moment it’s still effective.
However, you can’t really chase anyone with it anymore (besides Rhino and maybe Thunder or Fragger).
It moving faster the longer the distance was you pointed on raised its skill ceiling.

I agree, it’s really annoying on Trainyard.
I often find myself spawning the laser at C4 or at some wall just to avoid the tracks as best as I can.

Fixing the targeting would be great. There’s nothing more annoying that getting a reset because you strayed a pixel onto something that wasn’t the ground right as the entire enemy team shows up, robbing you of the instant ace. :’(

yeah i totally agree, I think it should be called in instantly and also the speed should be increased to 50m/s. oh yeah and why not add an automatic lock-on for all enemies within a 200m radius. and increase its damage against the EV by 300% to get max use out of every laser.

TBH its the way it is for balancing reasons. and, depending on who you ask the laser is OP or UP. really good kiras can do some serious work with the laser so I would tend to say it is fairly balanced.

Yeah i get that a lot as kira and arty especially when trying to target the ev, i wish putting the target at the front of the ev didnt reset it. It’s rather frustrating when you have the perfect chance to do some damage but NAH MATE WE DONT DO THAT SHIT AROUND HERE

Simple fix : make the laser loading “save” its progress as long as you hold the fire button. If you load it on a invalid surface, it’ll just stop where it is, allowing you to not loose your progress on that one pixel thing.

It can lead to some “surprise laser trap” scenarios, who are interesting but not really Kira’s role, and will probably be a bit frustrating to experience. So to make that a bit harder without removing everything : if the laser is held in an incorrect position for more than one second, it’ll begin to slowly loose its charge. The longer it remain in an incorrect position, the faster the charge will be lost.

Yeah, the big problem with simply removing the reset isn’t just that you could make a laser trap, you could even “cook” you laser around a corner just like a frag grenade. I can’t imagine how frustrating it’d be (well actually I can, it’d be very frustrating) if Kira could snipe you around a corner with a pre-charged laser like some sort of sparks-fragger hybrid who also gets 8 seconds of laser after a kill, and who doesn’t have to waste their airstrike if no one’s around the corner. I mean it’s still possible right now in like one or two places where the ground is completely flat but not most maps, but even as a kira player this is one of things I’m hoping the rewowrk will fix, not something I want it to make possible everywhere, because unavoidable deaths are stupid and shouldn’t exist.

What do you think Arty mains have had to deal with since day 1, and still have to deal with currently?

We can’t even control our artillery strikes.

This small buff would make Kira and Arty even better, which is always nice.

Charging the laser somewhere and suddenly pointing it at the other side of the map before it fully charges already works, so I don’t think there’s a too big issue here. Maybe my change could actually give to Kira that small boost she needs to be played in competitive. A Kira charging up a laser is pretty easy to spot, especially if that charge indicator moves : the human eye has a better movement detection.
