is steam a must to play brink on pc? or can it standalone without steam?
just a quickie
theres nothing on the Direct 2 drive site that says you need to run it via steam.
though i shouldnt think so, Bad Company 2 was offered through steam and other sources, but didnt require steam to run if you didnt get it from there.
this is by now really a faq or google question. BRINK is fully integrated into Steam so you must have Steam.

First up, we can confirm that Brink will be making full use of Valve’s Steamworks framework, which will provide a host of useful things for PC players, including the following:
- Voice Chat
- Valve Anti Cheat
- Friends support (including invites and joining sessions in progress)
- Steam Cloud (for save data)
- Challenge Leaderboards
- Steam Achievements

This product is not eligible for refunds. This title installs and requires STEAM to play.
It’s a full Steamworks enabled game, I don’t think you can run it without Steam. If it were just sold by Steam like Crysis 2 then you don’t.

Umm…
“This product is not eligible for refunds. This title installs and requires STEAM to play.”
It also has an image that says “3rd party download required”.

It has been like that for quite some time.

WHAT THE EFF?
once again the .co.uk extension of d2d fails, theres no mention on the .co.uk brink page of d2d that you need steam at all.
EDIT: apparently just been updated :S it does say you need it now.

Just been updated? Its been like that for months
From what someone else posted, yes you need Steam, prior I thought you had to have Steam just to have the Dedicated server… but it’s a Steam required game… which isn’t a bad thing… except for being VAC banned…
Assumption here, but every other standalone dedicated server I’ve seen with SteamWorks has been available via HLDSupdatetool.
i.e Steam not required.
That includes: L4D1/2, TF2, Killing Floor, Zombie Panic Source and Synergy.
don’t get your hopes up. there was a whole faq on dedicated servers and no mention of HLDS.
i don’t think you’ll need steam to run the server, you just need it to download the server files.
i was gonna make a “that’s what she said” joke about the thread title but i already got an infraction because of a useless post ![]()
