Javelin: intended use?

(ThunderZsolt) #1

This is not a nerf thread (i think she is fine) but a discussion about her role.

The devs clearly intended her to be a fire support, and her missile used like the other fire support abilities: clearing out enemies behind cover, MG nests, blowing up health stations and stuff like these. You can observe this in the merc role call video:

However, I’ve rarely seen a javelin using guided missile, and never seen firing from afar into an MG nest. Why?

I played her with only using the guided missile, and came up with the following conclusion:

**#1. The guided missile sucks. **
How do you launch the rocket? 1.2 seconds arming time, and after that you need to look at the target. Meanwhile, molotov and drone strike marker can be thrown instantly, arty strike and the orbital laser don’t require line of sight to target (and you can also move the laser).

OK, so how can you shoot a missile without having to stand in the open until the rocket lands? Easy, aim for the sky, and then redirect the guided missile to your target.
I have 2 problems with this:
1st, maybe it is just me, but I can’t control the rocket if I don’t have LoS - it just doesn’t go where I want.
2nd, if you get attacked, you are banjaxed. The only other fire support ability that requires attention after calling down is Kira’s laser strike - and I have no problem with shooting and moving it at the same time. You just can’t do that with Javelin.

My “solution” is start cooking in cover, and then peek out and shoot an unguided missile.

#2. The rocket has a short effective range.
Example: attacking Vault 1st objective, defenders are camping the MG, you are at the other side of the map. It’s easy to call an Arty strike on the MG without taking damage (although molotov and drone strike is tricky to land there), but can you use the javelin to take out the MG nest?

I don’t use guided missile because #1.
If you use an unguided missile, the enemy will shoot the rocket with the MG (it travels straight towards them, it would be harder to not shoot it), not to mention, that you have to basically no-scope headshot the enemy or miss.

At this point, I’d rather use my dreiss or BR16 to deal with that MG. But then comes the question, what is the missile good for?
#3. The rocket is effective as an alternative frag grenade.
Most players discovered this quickly, and other threads cover this part of the topic really well, so I won’t go in the details.

Considering the wall of text I created here, what do you think:
Is Javelin intentionally more like an assault merc than a fire support, or her design went “offroad” accidentally?

I use guided missile if I wanna aim far distances, standard for medium/close.

#3

You pretty much already covered her intended use and I don’t think it’s hard to be effective in those roles. I use guided 99% of the time and only play her ranged D81 loadout. Destroying health stations and Turtle shields, killing heavies, protecting a plant, finishing off the EV, stacking against teammates who are at ammo stations/crates, and blowing up generators are my biggest priorities on her.

Get a feeling the ammo belt is a lame excuse, for putting her into “Support” group.
I think she’d still be viable Assault, without the belt.

A lot of you mentioned that using the missile is viable at longer ranges, especially in guided mode.

I tried to search youtube for Javelin, but all I’ve found is showing off how to gib enemies in melee range, which I already know.

How do you fight a sniper/MG nest with the rocket (assuming the sniper doesn’t suck)?

i dont see how using dumbfire is ever any good. The speed difference is irrelevant, and the amount of control guide gives you can be a difference between splashdamage and a triple kill.

(Your worst knifemare.) #10

Her use is mainly to create salt against the enemy while giving her team a small amount of ammo.

I charge it in unguided mode and peek out at the last second as it comes out.

The velocity is 50% faster in “dumb mode” which is significant.

Hm interesting idea. She is not meant to create ammo but actually salt. Crazy enough to work! Lets ship her! People will love this.

The first few weeks of jav saw better use of her. Probably because it was only seasoned players who bought her and made her look good. Would die to trick shots all the time. Even at mid range just to make sure I could not dodge. Things like 5feet around a corner and a guided rocket comes around corner and nukes me. Now I rarely see this. The average player using jav seem to have gotten lazy and not even try guided mode. I know a friend for several days didnt even know how to use guided mode and didnt care! Guided made add a huge layer of strategy and really strikes fear into enemies. Jav using guided rockets means you cant be 13 feet from a corner without getting nuked! You cant just peak corners as a decent jav should nuke you. You can fire a few shots then retreat or go different route. Guided mode seems far better but see few use it. I know some of it is players getting used to counter playing it but mostly its lazy javs. Ive asked many javs and the reason they are playing her is easy wins. Not for ammo and not for strategic shots.

Also dont forget jav is amazing and nuking power boxes.
