I've heard lots of talk about soldiers being a pointless class

(hamstein) #1

Can’t Soldiers hand out ammo, give out different ammo types, destroy stuff, give out armor and “shield” teammates?

Those are the only abilities I know of but it makes it sound like they’d be very useful on the front lines.

I know people say engineer is useful and while I agree with that he buffs, defuses, builds and lays down traps. Pretty much just a defensive engineer.

Anyone else agree with me about how soldiers are probably not gonna be as useless as people think?

If anyone claims a class will be useless, they dont know as much about the game as they think. SD has done their best to make it so that teams will fall apart if they dont have all 4.

(ramzrie) #3

I think the soldier will be useful. It is what I plan on playing my first character as. I think the soldier will have a nice niche as a “crowd controller” by using 'nades.

Being that you can pretty much carry whatever load out you want on whichever class (within body type restrictions), I feel that classes are really just flavor. Hopefully, SD put in a lot of objectives in each map for all the classes so that there is constantly missions for each class to accomplish.

they took shielding out, but you need soldiers to blow stuff up and be youre main driving force, also the ammo thing

(iheartchainsaw) #5

Where have you heard this talk? I haven’t seen one thread on any forum about this.

(Kryptyk Samurai) #6

Not sure who all these people are who are “talking” but I’m guessing they haven’t followed the development of the game very closely. And unless they are press that have been invited to the preview parties or played at PAX East for all of 20 minutes (if they were lucky)…Regardless, I severely doubt any of the classes are useless. I’m sure there will be some favorites but they will be balanced and of course there are built in objectives for all the classes and therefore not useless at all.

really? in the latest videos i see messages where you get a “cevlar vest” by another player. is this something different or are even the latest vids out of date already?

(Ragoo) #8

If you want to blow **** up, be the toughest shooter and supply everyone and yourself with ammo - go Soldier.

Soldiers will probably be most important when you have to blow something up (duh, that’s obvious :P) and on the offense I guess, since Engineer seems more practical to control an area defensively with turret/mines.

@kilL_888 There was an ability in the game that made you a walking shield for your friends I think.
Afaik Engineers can give out kevlar vests to others and Soldiers can wear one themselves. Am I right?

Soldiers weren’t all that usefull in ET and ET:QW. Maybe that is where this talk is coming from. But now they can hand out ammo I think they will be fine.

(Striker92) #10

good GMPG/Rocket players could be very useful in ETQW, but thats my opinion

(Cortosis 12) #11

Every class has a goal. Otherwise the class would be pointless like a class equipped with “throwing twinkies” to distract the enemy.

Sorry double post my Internet connection needs to be upgraded from the service I had 3 years ago.

A team’s attack won’t go far if they’ve all only got 3 magazines, no grenades, and potentially can’t plant the bomb at the objective.

Soldiers are a staple part of any team. Mainly due to ammo!

(tokamak) #14

It’s not just handing out ammo, they also increase the max amount of ammo you can have.

Damage buff means less shots needed to incap/kill people. While I can’t see ammo being useless, the Engineer’s buff might take priority over it.

remember, as far as i know SD has said that you start with little ammo, but they did not specify how much. also, when you re-spawn, you re-spawn with the same amount of ammo you had when you died. so you can run out of ammo completely very quickly without a few soldiers. if you do not your team will LITERALLY have no ammo for most of the game.

(Ragoo) #17

Afaik you get ammo at command posts so this doesn’t make sense (it says so in the get SMART objectives video).

Hopefully pressing the “give ammo” button won’t be as hard as selecting an ammo box and randomly tossing it in BC2, I’ve stood in front of people saying “give ammo” and they just look at me and either walk away or continue doing what they were doing, even if it was camping. Same goes for medics, hopefully SD’s exp bribing and the in your face “GIVE HIM AMMO” will help.

I don’t know about that. In ET your right in that soldiers were not that useful in terms of objective as they couldn’t do any but, get a good morta or MG42 or even a flamer on indoor objectices and they can walk through teams. I always remember the old Panzerfaust + Mp40 combo at lvl 4 or Adrenaline + flamer lol.

As for ETQW SD made a good decision in my view in giving soldiers charges so it wasn’t just engineers who did objectives, so they are even more useful. A good hyperblaster/GPMG can literally mow people down and you need Rockets to take down flyers and other vehicles.

Sure you wont have vehicles in Brink but the soldier is still going to have the most offensive minded perks and abilities. You need them to blow up objectives and to hand out ammo like the field ops normally would and the grenade + Molotov combo means they have more grenades.

Don’t expect everyone who plays soldier to run wih the heavy body type, I plan to do that with one of the Heavy Machine guns but there will also be those who go light to blow those side entrances real quick etc.

(MatthiasK75) #20

shielding use to be a way for the soldier to take damage for another player, the kevlar vest is a defensive buff that is handed out by the engineer
