It's possible that duplicate IGNs are being allowed, needs testing

(AssortedStuff) #1

Yesterday I was playing (US servers) and a guy asked me how ‘xyz’ (can’t remember the name) was going. I asked who that was and he apologised and said I must not be the person he knew and that apparently me and that other player have the same IGN at the moment. (I got the impression that ‘xyz’ was either the wife or a friend of the other player with the same IGN as I).
I recently changed mine and I am surprised it would allow duplicates. If indeed is happening I’m not sure which company would be responsible to take care of this bug as I did it in the Nexon launcher.

On a side note, this would open some good trolling opportunities

This is intended behaviour.

I had the same “problem” on a game not so long ago. I was playing with my clan leader Goblin, when some guy with the exact same nickname joined up. We then had two Goblin playing on the server, what is quite weird. Anyway to fix it?

(stealth6) #4

Please do not fix this.

-stealth6 aka stealth

I was wondering why I kept seeing my name in one of the servers

I’m not clear on this, why is duplicate names a good idea ?

Just ran into my double last night. Not liking this.

Have you guys never heard of Steam or Quake?

Guess what, you can have any name you like!

Actually I’d like to know what games have such a silly policy as to stop players changing their names to whatever they desire.

And I was pissed at Actifail for 4 years when even though I tried to reserve my name someone stole it and then didn’t even bother to play the game!!!

I guess what I meant what games have achieved this in an acceptable way.

Although I still advocate that being able to change to whatever I want whenever I want is a much much more preferable solution, especially considering this is a F2P and smurfing would have no financial implication, better to let players change their name and instead just keep the same alphanumeric GUID.

Steam tag only works on Valve games. AVA, Blacklight Retribution, Soldier Front 1&2, Origin, Shootmania Storm and more. Sure in those games you could have someone else’s name but they would have “123” or "x(name)x. Even though I dont like it, its not going to stop me from playing. I have the triangle in my name he doesn’t, so people can tell us apart. But allowing people to be able to copy the exact gamer tag seems dumb to me. Especially for a free to play game where hackers are more rampant.
