Is it weird? Yes.

What is weird is this girl I met at a Quake Live lan in Sydney a few years ago, who used the most awkward controls I have ever seen.

Her left and right mouse button were forward and back, and she used . and / for strafe left and right. She used the right ctrl for shoot, right shift for jump, space for crouch and a whole bunch of other weird combinations I can’t even be bothered to explain haha.

Ever heard of ESDF?
I tried transferring once from WASD to ESDF, but apparently my left pinky is not used to keys like “a” “z”. So I decided to go back to WASD. Imagine how easier games would’ve been if ESDF was the norm… Too late for that now, unless you’re hardcore enough to do it.

I’ve been using ESDF since I started playing FPS games back in 2000. You get a lot more keys to work with (which was great for Q3 due to all the weapon and team binds) and it’s the home row keys so you’re fingers are going to already have the dexterity and muscle memory needed to hit every key without issue (I have issues with ctrl though so I don’t use it).

My only regret is I never figured out a good way to use some other key besides mouse 1 to fire. When you depress the button you have to keep your aim on target and in some games even small deviations can make you miss. It’s not a big deal but if all you had to do was move the mouse and you pressed a key on the keyboard to fire instead there would be no way to accidentally alter your aim via finger movement on the mouse. Using the spacebar to fire and mouse 2 to jump was pretty common back in the competitive Q1 days.

I might try that with a future game and then, after I get used to it, back port it to other games if it works out. I’ve never been one to remain set in my ways. But I can’t think of a good key other than spacebar and hitting that giant button to fire over and over seems awful. And in games where you jump a lot you’ll receive little benefit if I map it to mouse 2.

Decisions decisions.

I use Caps for crouch, LAlt for jump, Space for zoom. Scoped jump shots are a b!tch to pull off, but I don’t care.

@Amerika IKR! Unpressing LMB is so annoying with REVIVR, I’d prefer to press it once to start charging and then second time to shoot.

i’ve never used custom controls i’ve always used the default layout for every game i’ve ever played, i’m weird i guess.

That’s not weird. That’s downright horrific.

I’ve been using UHJK for a good 8 years or so now. I find UHJK better for keys as you have the same amount of keys ESDF has, but for me my thumb with UHJK sits natively between space and right alt, so I can use both more easily.

Each to their own really. Depending on the size of your hands control layouts can feel uncomfortable for some any way.

My controls are a little weird.

UHJK for movement
M1 shoot
M2 jump
mwheelup reload
mwheeldown quick slash
Y primary gun
I secondary gun
o melee weapon
space crouch
alt sprint
6 ability 1
7 ability 2
L repair/objective

I then also have m as crouch, so when I am sprinting with alt and can’t hit space, I can use m as crouch for long jumping.

my only changes are mouse 4+5 for abilities and q for sprint, left hand doesn’t work well

I just adapted my keys to the european keyboard (AZERTY)
