It’s been on a severe downward slope since they removed 6v6 from public. That was the biggest killer so far for us. We just don’t have the playerbase to randomly start up min 10 6v6 servers without waiting a long time and almost everyone I played Dirty Bomb with regularly despises 7v7 and 8v8, so they just don’t play it any more. Removing the 6vs6 servers was the biggest disappointment for me in the last months.
Is this game dying?
I dont understand why they removed those servers, db is really meant to be played on a smaller scale, which btw why can’t we have 5v5 servers?
The larger the games, the more people on a single server, and therefore the lower the overall cost to run dirty bomb, 5v5 servers are more expensive in the long run

What’s that… green stuff?
The game has been been losing 10% of players each month. The trend might stop because of the free stuff they are giving, but it will only help the bleeding not stop it. I have stopped playing the game for lack of optimization and content. If they add some actual content I would play this game non stop again.
As for content creators well it’s a bit complicated. I can only speak for myself… lack of optimization and content drove me away, also covering a dying game is not smart for someone that actually wants to be successful on YT.
The games not dead but it is slowly dying. Its not in a healthy state and hasn’t been for a while. Recent patches are looking to finally get around to bug fixing but even that has been met by ‘meh’. Issue for me personally is, there just isn’t enough content to keep me hooked. People will say it’s not dying thougj and that’s fine, but the numbers are falling slightly and most of the active players are nee and just trying the game out, very few stay.
It will be a bit like Quake - The gameplay is too good so I can’t ever see it completely dying. There will always be loyal fans sticking around.
I’m probably one of them. Though I have little interest to play at the moment while there is a lack of players, I will keep playing it as often as possible as long as the gameplay is good.
Personally I’m not bothered by the lack of content. Being a Quake player my whole life I’m kind of used to the lack of guns / lack of maps / lack of players etc. Clan arena on Quake is basically how Dirty Bomb is now where there is only really two game modes that are played and we play the same 4-5 maps over and over again.
But I do know some people love the new content and stopped playing purely because there hasn’t been any. Imagine a huge event where 4-5 maps were released, 4-5 new mercs were released and a new rarity of skins was released or something to go along with it. That would surely bring some players back for a prolonged period of time I think, where there was enough content to keep them busy for more than 1 day before they’re bored again.
I know that will never happen though, but it would be lovely.
LOL, we played W:ET on the same 6 maps for 2 years+ for a lot of servers xp was zeroed every 3 maps and people waited and waited to get on fav servers. Guess people are somewhat more impatient these days

Man, I was playing almost exclusively on 24/7 Fuel Dump only server for quite some time, and it was full every day. On it’s best days It had about 200 regular players plus staff.
But, this is why we need community servers.
I spent several months on 24/7 Fuel Dump only, we ran stock maps from day 1, never needed any others. afaik, the server is till running,
The problem is that Dirty Bomb maps aren’t as compelling as maps in those old FPS’. Those old ones always had some kind of unique fun thing to do, or were structured in such a unique way that you, quite literally, had to LEARN the map to play it.
DB maps aren’t like that. Hell, a lot of modern games aren’t like that. You just need to learn where the objectives are and where the path to the objective is and you’re done. Map learned. The maps are all very same-y and employ mostly the same strategies save for a few tweaks to make up for slightly different cover spots. It’s kinda like playing on a 24/7 server with a very mediocre map that you don’t really care about.
The game isn’t dead but it’s trending down. I don’t think anything was as brutally game ending as removing public 6v6. The developers just really don’t get it when it comes to this game. They advertise competitive 5v5 play and call it the “core of Dirty Bomb”, and then force you to play 7v7, 8v8, or wait for a 6v6 server, when you want to play casually. Then they balance the game based on 5v5 play, a huge minority of all games, and constantly have to re-balance weapons and cooldowns because the changes they made are horribly abusable in 7v7 and 8v8, the vast majority of all DB games.
Seriously SD, either remove 6v6/7v7/8v8 and make all modes 5v5, or get rid of 5v5. I don’t care which one it is.
Aren’t we a bit spoiled by saying “This online game is dead, cause it’s >1000 population.”
Didn’t games like Quake or UT have like 500 players, back in the 90’s?
I feel like @MidnightButterSweats said it pretty perfectly. DB id supposed to be this highly competitive, 5v5 based game, and personally, I feel like it plays so much better in that setting. For some reason though, the devs are pushing higher player count servers, and do not even want to give the option for friendly fire on in casual play. The reason for that being “because it would be to easily abused” according to shoe.
Outside of ranked, there is no option to play the game as intended, and that just confounds me.

UT had 2k+ players on back in 2005 when I played it online for the first time, this after UT2k3 and 2k4 both coming out.

UT had the benefit of map and mod tools , user made content is what helped make that game appealing and helped it’s longevity
I certainly hope not, I just came back from a 4 month hiatus.

Couldn’t you set up a AUS Dirty Bomb steam group or something maybe invite anyone you play with and set times/dates for Dirty Bomb get togethers? Foster a lil mini community?
Takes a bit of effort but could well pay off if you were willing to do it.
