Is there a way to change your in-game name independent of Steam?

I really do hate it when games force the use of your Steam name, if I need to add tags or something I don’t want to change my name on Steam.

There used to be but it was removed because hackers were abusing it to avoid being vote kicked. You can set your clan tag with “setclantag tagname”, and remove it with “removeclantag”.

The setclantag var is restricted to 5 letters unfortunately.

There’s an easier way to fix people abusing it to avoid being kicked, instead of kicking by name it internally kicks by playerID. Not that hard.

Well the problem was hackers were automatically changing their name to the name of other players in the server, so you wouldn’t know which player to kick.

Ah yes, I can see that being a problem, what’s stopping them changing their steam name though. Why not just make it so you can only change your in-game name from the menu then? That would stop them changing it mid-game to avoid anything.
