Is Rhino too Situational?

(jjpdn) #1

Title.
He feels too tanky and impossible to kill when there is a forced confrontation with him in mid-close range (not even close range cause then it gets too hard to get people who just spin around.
Then all his weapons are horrible at mid range (even while crouched burst firing), and useless at long range.

What do you guys think?

not all mercs should be viable in all scenarios

it is good that some mercs are situational

(Reddeadcap) #3

Yes, he’s situational. That’s not bad as it allows counterplay.

(Sorotia) #4

He is a good pub stomper…other than that he is kinda meh.

(jjpdn) #5

Well, I meant if he was too situational. I listed the only time he would be useful, and it only happens if someone is too surprised to dodge.

(Sorotia) #6

Mileage varies between skill of you, your team, and opponents…but he does kinda suck at anything but close range…but his buff has given him a bit more range with the minigun.

There are tight areas all over most maps…the only really truly open map where I could imagine he is close to useless is Dome…all of the objectives are wide open spaces.

Really? I’ve seen people dominate with Rhino in public matches by using that tap technique with the minigun (which, in my opinion, is completely broken). Even worse when he has his own medics

(jjpdn) #8

In public matches, of course. A lot of time there’s just people who jump in front of the Rhino thinking they’re God.
And of course, the medic thing is also horrible until you have explosives.
But, by himself, I have yet to see a Rhino dominate.
I mean, I’ve seen tripple kills in hallways, but thats about it.

Ive yet to see Rhino used to any degree in a ranked match and do well. He’s just too slow and too big.

I keep rhino in my squad as a surprise for mid game. He does best on underground and in the right hands he can deal serious damage, such as providing flanking crossfire during aggressive pushes. His unsung ability is to ‘tenderize’ groups even at distance so your teammates can have an easier time with the enemy. These are the hard to master aspects of an easy to use ability.
But frankly, he is too reliant on select medics (aura) to keep alive. All that health doesn’t mean much against accurate head shots and large hit box, so if healing isn’t around, this guy is in a corner waiting to self heal. Personally, I think his minigun is tweaked just fine (controlled bursting is key) but other aspects are really cramping his style.
Some avenues to explore without touching his health or hit box are already implemented elsewhere. For instance, given his large size( thus health) all that armor should count for something… Perhaps he needs an adjusted armor ability similar to phantoms, providing that tank like feel. Or he could pay tribute to Tf2 heavy and carry a reduced number of mini health packs (nom nom) with a slower recharge rate. Thinking on it, these both would blend well with the looter ability by offering a more independent play style not presently available.
Regardless the approach, it will be a small approach like this which will see him more applicable on maps without becoming unbalanced.

Oh, and gosh, give me wall/tank’ xp for taking so much damage. I just wrecked a team and took massive hits protecting that planting proxy, yet I’m still near bottom of scoreboard while that medic is way high up there for simply throwing a med pack and proxy had enough protection to press the action button.

Many people may disagree, because all they think about Rhino is “Hurr Durr, you only press 1 butten and aim on headz”, but he has quite an average learning curve to be effective not only in “I sit on health-stationz” scenarios. He is harder to play in Attack than defense, but I managed to carry a game on Trainyard with planting both C4s after wiping out the whole team in ranked months ago once.
He is kinda like Fletcher, little bit lower in terms of skill-level. Easy to play, harder to master.

Harder to master? If you compare rhino against most mercs that statement is inaccurate at best.

His minigun takes quite a while to spin up. Shoot him a couple times in the head and he will be dead, gosh darnit she should have worn his helmet.

(Szakalot) #15

not the nitro minigun which is what everyone uses

Still takes a lot of time.
