Like the title says… He is the last merc i need to buy other than Arty (who I STILL refuse to buy because he is outclassed by all the other fire support mercs by 10 miles)
Is Redeye worth it?
Yes. He also has access to the Dreiss like Arty and Kira. He uses that semi auto sniper Vassili has and his own unique GSR (basically an m-14). Keep in mind, he’s a marksman, not a sniper. He can spot enemies with his goggles as well which is always useful. He throws smoke grenades, but you have to be careful when using them because they can also hurt your team if poorly thrown. His only downside imo is that he only gets pistol secondaries.
He’s pretty tricky to get used to. I suck at him, but for some reason I did my best and got 3 Aces the first time I used him because the trick is to throw smoke in a hallway or corridor since there’s only one line of sight and the enemy only have one way to go.
I found that using smoke to cover yourself works when you fight against more than one opponent, as they can’t see you.
As mentioned, I can’t wrap my head (or imaginary hands) around the Grand properly. It just feels “off” to me, and the iron-sight is completely atrocious; it blocks a ridiculous amount of view and yet has a crappy sight. I want to like it, but I just can’t.
The smoke and goggles are fine, not a fan of the low duration and high cd (since explosions nullify it) but balance somehow, somewhere.
I am hoping for a design-pass on the Grand or simply giving him access to a smg or whatnot.
I think so. The Grandeur is terrible but if you’re good with the Dreiss or PDP I’d give him a shot. His smoke grenade is a pretty unique asset and the IR goggles’ spotting feature is actually extremely useful. I love him personally, though you have to keep in mind he’s not some insane eZpKz merc, he’s a more of a support sniper.
If you are smart with your smokes, resourceful and efficient with your IR goggles, and effective with either the Dreiss or PDP, you can do quite well as him and your team will be glad you’re a part of it.
personally i haven’t been very successful with him and feel other mercs are more useful and easier to use to for-fill similar objectives. That being said, there isn’t much to spend credits on either than cases and mercs so it wouldn’t hurt to get him. you never know, maybe you will love his gameplay style!
Personally, I felt he was a bit of a waste of money, but that’s only because I suck at him xD
One thing I should note though - whatever Red Eye can do, a lot of mercs can do better. His weapons for example: If you want to ‘snipe’, go for Vassili as he has access to the MoA and FEL-IX, while Red-Eye only has the fairly poor (in my opinion) PDP.
His infra-red is useful for picking people off but it’s nothing really too special. As for his smoke grenade, 9 times out of 10 some Leeroy will throw it right in the middle of the room without realising he/she is messing things up for their team-mates, not just the enemy…
Although, this is simply my opinion as he isn’t reeally my style and i’m not sure why I bought him… I think the hype was too real
If you like the idea of a marksman, then I would get him. I’d just say, think about his weapons, rathed than his abilities! Because like me, if you suck with his weapons, you will suck with him over-all… No amount of smoke or infra-red will save you xP
I like him better than Vasili because he’s more suited to being in the mix with the team or at least right behind them which a good Vasili will do but lets face it most of them are hiding in corner miles away.
Also arty got a boost in a recent patch and his artillery is a lot more effective not, you don’t have to politely ask the enemy to stand totally still while you take ages to line up the artillery to land directly on their head any more. It’s quicker to designate and just landing near them actually does damage now!
Well, a redeye is pretty useful for the team, especially for spotting enemies. But playing it yourself is a bit of a pain.
And some players just don’t know how to use smoke. I saw a dude in a recent game constantly blocking his team mates’ view with smoke. When I complained he said “but that’s my ability!”
@Aazhyd Right?.. I’ve had people several times throw smoke grenades in the middle of the final room on Bridge (where you pick up the drug samples from) and then my team like headless chickens charge in thinking it’s safe, only to be slaughtered by Bushwhackers and Rhinos camping behind the smoke…
I think an important thing to bear in mind with Red-Eye is that the smoke doesn’t just effect the enemy team, it effects your team too! xD
This is so true.
Red Eye’s ability is indeed more useful for the Red Eye himself.
You sure do get a marker but… meh.
You can’t see the heads nor can you see if there is some sort of wall or other structure.
Well, and while you are almost blind an enemy Red Eye can just snipe you off.
He’s amazing as mobile cover, People tend to ignore or “Watch” the smoke, however they won’t fire testing rounds trough it, It works amazing when you’re diffusing or planting an objective. You can also trow some smoke in a completely off direction to distract your opponent and then launch an assault from another angle
Keep this up a few time and you’ll condition the enemy to ignore the smoke. Thats when you charge 4 guys trough it from an awkward angle and lock the defenders in. Causing them to be cautious of the damned smoke again. Its REALLY good for mindgames
Grandeur is a very a “bad” weapon.
