Is Phantom OP?

(sentimentalDime) #1

So, i’ve seen a lot of people saying that he is OP whenever i’ve played him, just wanted to see if the people on the forums share that view.

(Verticules) #2

He is balanced in combat, but lacks viability for team comps.

(gg2ez) #3

Phantom isn’t terrible but he’s nothing special. His sole purpose is to kill people but if I really wanted to kill people, I’d play Nader of Fragger who could do the same job, only with better means of killing people and the capacity to do it in less time with more survivability.

That being said, I enjoy playing Phantom and the amount of rage I produce whenever I uncloak behind an enemy and headshot them to death. Ambushes are kind of my favourite thing to do.

(affableTricycle) #4

If Phantom was any better he’d be just as annoying as he was before the nerf. I still don’t think he belongs in this game at all. Neither a cloak nor a shield belong in a competitive FPS because they give you the advantages of good positioning without needing the skill required to have good positioning. Also being killed by the katana still feels cheap and annoying, and that’s coming from a guy who quickchats Great Shot! whenever he gets sniped or direct hit.

(SirSwag) #5

I do have to agree with gg2ez. If his sole purpose is to kill other mercs, then he’s outclassed by so many other options. A lot of which have more team based utility. He either needs something to make him more deadly, or something to at least make him more helpful to a team.

I think he is more UP than just slightly.
Something that is not major to the gameplay itself is that he does not get many points using his cloak (only like 1xp at a time when near an enemy) causing him to lean towards the lower half of the score board.

It’d be cool if he had a passive (radius) where it disables defences.
Or something where he changes the IFF of a deployable (and change ownership to that phantom maybe so like Bushwacker can’t just deploy another turret).
These 2 kinda seem OP though.

Balanced enough

I only voted “underpowered” because there was no “he’s just bad” option. The Katana’s power is not at all bad, but melee combat in a game like this is not good to begin with. Wonky hit detection all of the place, weird range perception, etc.

What makes him bad (but not underpowered) is that he’s built totally wrong for this game and for his purpose. People say that he’s a great scout, but Vasilli does this much better and at a much safer distance than Phantom can, and does not require a mic for scouting. I’ve killed more people with frag grenades, sticky bombs, and shotguns than I have with any of Phantom’s weapons, and don’t even get me started on Phantom having knives in his loadout.

To be honest, I don’t think Phantom could ever really be good without feeling extremely cheap to his victims. (Yet for some reason I can one-shot someone with a shotgun blast to the face at point blank range and no one complains about cheapness.)

(XavienX) #9

He’s not the WORST, cuz I can still surprise others and flank them but his mechanics is just still too predictable especially that experienced players can hear him from a mile away and eventually spot his refractive armor outline.

(GildedDark) #10

In the right hands he can rek, and those are my hands

(Grave_Knight) #11

He’s only ever so slightly UP, but closer to balanced than anything else. He could use a couple tweaks here and there (especially his sword) but he’s pretty viable at least in PUB (he’s lack of utility powers don’t make him very useful in COMP).

(TheOrangePhantome) #12

@GildedDark If you mean in pubs yeah i can rek in them as well. But to be good with him in comp you really have to be concentrated and not make mistakes because you can be still found somewhat easily.

(GildedDark) #13

i can use him in both of them XD

(Someordinaryguy) #14

I voted UP but for with a few tweaks he could become a true Assassin-like class:
1)Remove SMG’s from his loadouts and give him katana+pistol combo (like in Scrubs trailer [maybe a machine pistol for knife loadouts, so he’s slightly more powerful at range])
2)Remove Armor aspect of cloak and buff it’s “invisibility”
3)Increase katana range and fix the “reduced range” on stab attack (it’s a giant freakin sword FFS)
4)Reduce turn limit on stab attack
5)Katana stab kills are an insta-gib (slashes are not)
6)Bring back Chopper augment to 20%
7)Make this “ringing” noise when cloaked harder to hear

This will solidify Phantom as a Infiltrator merc that’s supposed to be sneaky, pick off lone wolfs/HVT’s and get the hell out. He’ll suck at range and versus groups

(Mr-Penguin) #15

Phantom really needs a secondary spotting ability. If he’s a recon, how come he has no spotting tools? It would also help if he was a lot more invisible (90% or so) and the shield was removed.

  1. No. Obviously you never played him in CBT and that limitation sucked. Besides, while the sword is his signature weapon it’s not exclusive to him just as the Hochfir is not exclusive to Phoenix.
  2. Hell, no. That armor keeps me alive (when I actually can pull it off in a fight). And he doesn’t need a buff to his invisibility, it’s fine where it is. (Stop running all the time.)
  3. It’s not a giant sword. Its a longsword. That being said it’s weird that a thrusting attack has less reach than a cut.
  4. Eh. While I would love more forgiveness on missing with a thrust at the same time that’s the problem with a thrust. You open yourself up. Granted you should be able to recover faster from a thrust than with a cut but this is where realism needs to give away to mechanic balances. Can’t have the strongest attack also be the fastest.
  5. NO! JUST NO! NOO! Firstly, the coding issues with that alone would be more work than it’s worth. Secondly, it can already down roughly half the mercs (with chopped). And if you’re to lazy to use your primary to finish them off you don’t deserve the gib.
  6. …the thrust without chopped does 90 damage, pre-nerf with chopped it did 108 damage, post-nerf with chopped it does 103.5 damage. That’s a difference of 4.5 damage. The cut, being weaker, has less difference in damage. Why the hell are you caring about 4.5 damage?

Decided to join a game today and played against level 20 players. His cloak is utter shit and its use is only for tanking a couple of shots and nothing more. I stand still with cloak on I get shot, I move with cloak on I get shot. Against good players, Phantom has a nearly useless skill. Against blind players, his skill is god-like.

(TheOrangePhantome) #18

Well @Kevin if you know how to play him well he’s good.

(Kevin) #19

You mean know how to aim, but yea if I was good at that any character would be decently OP, but you can’t deny that skills only use is for tanking shots or runnng away or getting close to people who can’t play against him.
