Is my Laptop bad ?

I really enjoy this game but for some reason I am getting fps spikes. It runs at 90-110 fps when fully optimized for performance ( running everything on low ). But then at some point something happens and it can drop to 60 eve down to 30 fps which is really annoying. I’ve been searching alot online but i cant seem to find a solution to this. I am wondering is my laptop just bad and not good enough to run this game with any higher FPS?

I am running this setup :

GeForce GT 640M
Intel®Core™i7-360QM CPU @ 2.40GHz
8GB Ram

You could always try fps configs from the reddit thread but yeah if you’re playing on a laptop you’re gonna have to expect lag and fps drops D:

this can happen in dirty bomb thanks to tonnes of skyhammers throwing airstrikes at once, or something similar that are intensive

Your GPU/CPU may be overheating. Check temperatures while playing.

I had this with my PC

i5 4670k, 280x, 16gb DDR3 1600MHZ RAM. Installed onto SSD with windows 7 64 bit

and reinstalling/verifing the game cache in steam + disabling Steam Overlay (Right Click Dirty Bomb in Steam, Properties, Uncheck Steam Overlay Option which should be staring you right in the face, sorry quite drunk not good for IT Support xD) vastly improved performance, but this could be a isolated case.

Thanks, I will try that.

When you’re saying fully optimized for performance you mean potato config, right? Cause there’s no way you’re getting 90-110 FPS on low settings with that setup.

Your set up is on the week side and that’s to be expected of a laptop sadly. Maybe potato configs will bring it back up to a playable level for you but it sounds like your having thermal problems. Performance will drop off when your hardware gets hot and laptops are known for running incredibly hot, in fact Intel CPU’s in laptops frequently hit the 90c mark which is absurd. Maybe monitor your temps with core temp and msi afterburner and see if it is the heat that is causing you the problems.

Ye I think you guys might be right… I need a good PC and not a laptop…

i have weird fps problems too

Processor: Interl® Core™ i7-4710HQ CPU @ 2.50GHz 2.50GHz
Installed RAM: 8.00 GB
System Type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Display Adapters: Intel® HD Graphics 4600, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M
(^i have no idea what those are, btw, just copied them^)

also optimized with that geforce experience thing, and it set everything to low. the game runs at 70fps sometimes, but randomly drops to like 20-15. okay not so random, usually when i walk into some wide open area with lots of stuff onscreen, or when i try to do trickjumps or suddenly ran into an enemy.

also i use an msi laptop and always press the button for faster fan speed whenever i start a game.

where can i find potato configs btw?

If your FPS is dropping at a certain point it means that your laptop is getting too how and it’s clocking itself down to compensate. If my laptop goes over 79C then it will clock itself down to 1ghz instead of running at max. This not only reduces your FPS but it also causes system lag when it happens.

The best thing you can do is run an FPS config, download Open Hardware Monitor and turn it on while you play and then check what the highest temps were per core while playing. Then, since it’s definitely going to tell you it got hot, try getting one of those trays with fans on them made for laptops. That might help but it might not if your laptop just isn’t setup right to dissipate heat properly when ran that hard (many aren’t).

Some things i can recommand, after i’ve played several games with a Laptop for about 1.5 years:

  • If the fan sucks in air from below the Laptop, put a book at each side of it to elevate it (this can help alot!)
  • Clean the fans once in a while (every 2 months maybe) depending on how much you use it
  • If you really don’t want to get a new computer and think it’s worth the investment get one of those fancy Laptop coolers (something like this)
  • For your next big investment in gaming hardware, get a desktop and assemble it yourself

Solid advice. I remember my old laptop used to overheat like a horny devil in hell and that really does cause issues. Desktops really are the way to go for gaming, whenever you can afford one in the future.
