Is demo recording supported?

(Sagan on Roids) #1

ET had a /record command that was really useful for recording/sharing matches, and it was even required for TWL competitive play. It looks like [UDK supports a similar commands: demorec, demoplay, and demostop](https://udn.epicgames.com/Three/ConsoleCommands.html#Still Captures and Demo Recording Commands). Although the commands seem to work (not autocompleted), trying to replay a demo results in a crash.

Demo recording offers several benefits over Fraps, Dxtory, etc.:

  • Significantly more performant, so players with lower-end machines will be able to record.
  • The resulting .demo files are significantly smaller than videos.
  • You can change your graphics settings for the recording (play with low settings, record the video later in high settings).

It’d be great if this was officially supported. Thanks!

I am significantly disappointed that demos aren’t a thing in DB, especially considering their extensive history in previous SD games (W:ET, QW:ET, Brink [I think?]).

“The demo system also works, Demorec to start recording, demostop to stop recording and Demoplay to play the demo file http://i.imgur.com/88QRPJX.png , i suppose you could make some jump videos or something with this. THIS ONLY WORKS ON LOCAL GAMES NOT ON LIVE GAMES :D”

These need to be implemented ASAP.

It would also make reporting cheaters a lot easier.

That and unlagged crosshairs.

There were multiple people asking about this feature, not idea if it is even possible with the game engine. This used to be a must have feature for a competitive FPS, but I doubt we will see it here.

Demorec is one of the most requested features and they are working on it AFAIK.
Most likely in the form of serverside demos (based on one of the devstreams) they are already recording serverside for stats and stuff already. But have yet to figure out a way to efficiently distribute them.

Demo feature is built into the engine. Maybe the game will survive long enough for the devs to run out of more important things to do so they could work on fully implementing it.

I have brought this up on the dev streams before and they answered stating that they want it in the game. It makes sense as demos are great for easily storing your play without taking up much space, MUCH better to use for making videos as you can play at your normal settings and then make everything pretty in videos, for AC efforts and for replay value in league/tournament play.

They know this and it will hopefully make it in to the game soon.

I remember using this way back on UT99. Was a great feature, it even went as far as to let you switch between different player’s view real time, and have a ghost cam as if you were spectating a match that had already been played.

The problem however I found with it was due to updates to the game, causing textures, or other system files to be out of date or no longer used. This caused demos to crash when you attempted to load them, making them useless at that point.

Hope to see it added one day though!

There are ways around that now. In CS:GO, for example, you can watch demos recorded from several patches ago but there will be a couple visual bugs here and there if animations were changed during the updates.
