Is D2D version the same version

(Cankor) #1

I have heard from some people that they have had issues with patches coming late for their games they bought on Direct2Drive. I guess the D2D digital download versions are different from the other versions, including the digital download ones purchased on Steam.

Does anyone know if the D2D version of Brink is identical to the retail version, especially in terms of getting patches? I don’t want to rely on a 3rd party to release patches, it’s one more layer I don’t need and one more thing to go wrong.

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this, I trust you guys though and don’t feel like I’d get a straight answer from anyone at D2D.

Thanks

Considering that brink is a steamworks game it shouldn’t be an issue. If its anything like previous steamwork games that were sold at d2d you could simply just enter in your cdkey they provide into steam itself and dl/install the game from steam and not have to bother using their (d2d) dl services.

Yes. Steam will update the game at the same time irrespective of where you bought/downloaded it from.

Is it cheaper on D2D? Why bother with it when Steam is mandatory anyway.

D2D did a special a while back, it was posted in here. I think I got it for $10 off, you know, that thing where getting it for less meant more than getting a hat and gun for paying the same as everyone else.

Yeah, I ordered if from D2D last weekend when they had a 20% sale on all FPS’s, so got $10 off. No way are a few hats and gun skins worth $10 to me, so it was a no-brainer until someone told me they had issues in the past with patches coming out late for their D2D versions of games they had in the past.

So that’s my worry. If it gets patched the same (i.e. a patch from Steam will work) no matter where I buy it then I’m happy. If I have to rely of D2D to take a patch and add soemthing to it to make it work with the version I downloaded from them I’m going to try and cancel and just buy it retail.

But those games were probably something like ETQW which had Steam/D2D version.

yeah, I think that’s pretty much my question. How do I know the D2D version isn’t different? Just because it doesn’t have to be since Steamworks is integrated with it regardless?

The D2D version is the same game and will just plug into Steam.

Slightly OFFTOPIC, but sucks that SD couldnt make a steam-less release in addition to the steamworks one, to those fans who don’t like Steam.

Again, the onus of that is with the publisher, just be glad it isn’t GFWL.

It’s also a very practical matter of PSN and Live offering a lot of functionality that a developer would have to code themselves if they didn’t use the Steamworks platform.

Thanks Badman, I did hear back from D2D and they told me the same thing but I have had salesmen tell me many things that don’t turn out to be true later in the cold light of day so it’s good to have it confirmed
