His name is Simo Häyhä. Since ä =/= a in Finnish. Unless we want to say that Ceorce Bush and Bill Glinton were recent Amerigan presidents.
Iron sights vs optics
English keyboards require modifier keys to generate those characters, and since English has no accents at all, most English keyboard users wouldn’t have a clue where each accented character is on the layout or which key to use to generate them
From what I’ve seen they’re clearly marked on international keyboards - not so on English layouts.
well, when i type out “Español” I generally don’t include a tilde. Its not that I don’t understand there’s a difference, its just that my keyboard does not contain a “ñ” key, and I don’t happen to memorize alt-code tables.
And this is even further from the original topic than the Simo Häyhä discussion was.
I have an American keyboard, and yet I managed just fine. It takes a modicum of effort and respect for the man.
People spell my name wrong all the time.
Just to toss this out there Simo Häyhä was facing the Red Army during the winter war. One of the most poorly trained armies on the planet (at the time). It’s no wonder he killed so many.

point is simple: iron-sights FTW and optics still sucks, even being considerably improved last decade[more than whole last age].
so if you want to win, you SHOULD master IS skills, not only polish you lovely optics[this time its C7/ACOG derrivatives for NATO/BluFor AR-soldiers].
last years, hybrid systems, breach into mass-market, such as opto-mechanical systems ,fiber-optics, holo sights and D/N/Termal sights and move it forwars a bit, but importance of ironsight not lost. not even a bit.[/QUOTE]
Oh please. This is just so BS. Optics are great, red dot and holosights are great.
I was in the army, trained as a sergeant in reconnaissance. I have used an HK MG3 lmg with ironsight, an HK G3 with ironsights, a Diemaco C7 with a 3.4x Elcan optic sight (and some antitank weapons with and without scopes which I consider irrelevant).
I am a hunter, both rifle with a 2-12x scope, and shotgun with only a front post.
I have played airsoft for many years with a variety of configurations and sights, including red dots, holosights, scopes, laser sights and flashlights (no ironsighting, it is impossible with a mask). I laugh as much at airsoft experience as the next guy, but you do have to aim and fire your weapon a lot.
Red dots and holosights are far superior to ironsights. Aiming with ironsights with both eyes open can be difficult, while that is how you’re supposed to use red dots. You can make aimed shots with red dots as fast as you can make snap shots with ironsights, and aimed fire is much faster with red dots too, and misaligned ironsight posts are never a problem. It is just much superior, the only downside being target obscurement, which is honestly rarely a problem.
With illuminated optics (provided a daytime setting), you can make snap shots in much the same way as with red dots - left eye sees the target, right eye sees the dot. I’ve shot a running boar at 10 meters with my rifle with the scope at x10 magnification with this technique.
With optics without illumination, snap shots become a bit more difficult, as you can’t see the target over the barrel with a cheek weld. Floating your head so you can see the front sights or muzzle over the optics and focus on that allows for sufficient snap shooting though, and on reaction courses I believe we did no worse with our Elcan-optics-equipped C7s compared to the ironsight only G3s.
Once it comes to aimed fire, optics are by far superior. Much quicker and much more precise. Loss of situational awareness is miniscule compared to the benefits of much increased engagement range and precision. Many experienced shooters keep both eyes open while shooting (this is the most effective shooting technique due to pupil flare from closing one eye), and the rest will typically only close one eye at the last moment. Of course, high magnification is counterproductive for short range shooting, but something like the Elcan’s 3.4x is beneficial at pretty much any range.
Now, that is just my experience and opinion, influenced by fellow soldiers and hunters. Then there’s the fact that any military or police outfit that isn’t short on funds put optics or red dots on their weapons, which I assume they do for a reason.
Do you have anything except for some WWII sniper to back your claim that ironsights are superior?
Iron sights on everything, the Carb 9 one being particularly nice. I iron sight about 50%, if not more, of my kills.
Since when do fascists deserve respect? Yes, awesome soldier sure, but we’re not lauding Himmler for his efficiency either now are we?
Himmler wasn’t an awesome soldier, though, was he? Keep the politics off the forum.
Politics off the forum? You’re the one demanding respect for someone fighting for a force praised by Hitler.
Hitler praised German Shephard Dogs too. Doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the breed, and doesn’t mean that Finns defending their country against an invasion are fascist. I’m not bringing the politics into the discussion.
I prefer Red dot sights In-game. as in my book, easier aiming > slightly faster equip speed
Cough Godwin’s law cough
Demanding respect for (dubious) war heros is politics as far as I’m concerned.
When you discuss the co-belligerent forces of Nazi Germany you arrive at Hitler pretty fast yeah, it’s akin of shouting ‘godwin’s law’ during history class.
No politics is a nice way of saying don’t talk about history, current events, basically anything that matters.
There are two weapons accurate enough to use scopes somewhat effectively. Otherwise they hinder mid range with little benefit for long range.
Regardless, talking about politics and religion is an explicit violation of the forum rules.
That should be an explicit violation!
It’s almost as bad as using “the” rather than the extended “thee”, before words beginning with a vowel. A terrible state of affairs.
(Just a friendly riposte to the accented characters thing
Please don’t shoot me. I’ll shut up now)
:infiltrator:
There’s a difference that is, I think, being ignored between “please refrain from” and “do not.”
How’s the weather?
Oh, it’s [censored! discusses climate change]
How are you?
Oh, not bad but [censored! discusses health care]
Perhaps I’m simply misinterpreting how draconian the rules actually are but I never saw it as a blanket ban on discussion (of things that matter) but rather as a warning of where discussions that could become intractable disagreements may lead.
