Integrated voice chat and new player retention.

Good argument!

I’ve found this depends on the game, or possibly the age range of the people playing it. There are some games where you mostly get kids screaming or spamming inane music all the time and you can’t reach for the mute button quick enough, but when I played DOD VOIP was an integral part of the game, everyone used it, it was part and parcel of the community spirit of the game, hardly anyone ever abused it, friendships were formed, between regulars on particular servers and between clans, I can’t imagine the game without it.

As long as you can a) disable it completely if you want and b) mute individual players, I really don’t see the issue.

I like listening to people who rage on CS:S publics, that’s the only thing that makes me wanna spend another hour in-game as I only do enjoy CS gameplay while playing with my friends through LAN

VOIP was very useful in ETQW both on pubs and in ETQWpro gathers/custom servers. Always used it to chat with friends and to communicate gamewise. Dunno what’s the problem for some people with it - the controls to mute all or individual players was perfect. There was even fade in.

I was also skeptical of VOIP before ETQW probably because never used it before that, but quickly I learned it to be a very useful and entertaining tool. Of course TS or mumble is better but that is impossible to use for random games on pub.

Need some kind of middleman software so the people on teamspeak / mumble / ventrilo can talk to the people in game and vice versa.

(prophett) #26

I had the same attitude until I got heavy into CSGO’s matchmaking a few months ago. It’s the first game I have ever used in game VOIP in extensively (ie - more than 10 minutes total) - I never use it on GO pubs.

For me to use it in xT, it would need to have a solid built in competitive feature, otherwise I have very little interest in talking to people on pubs.

(shaftz0r) #27

ive never used it really, but i see the usefulness. i just think its extremely low priority, and if it is implemented, there needs to be a callvote mute, and/or easy to access mute features

Like I said, to the Alpha community it’s not very useful. For community building, I see it as absolutely essential.

I can guarantee if I introduce this game to my casual FPS buddies without integrated VoiP, the chances of getting them to play more than a couple games are pretty low. It shouldn’t be my job to introduce them to semi-necessary third party software, it should be my job to invite them to play xT.

good point, a lot of people take it for granted. Not everyone knows about teamspeak, mumble or w/e

in-game voice simply makes for better pub play, obviously for organized play it has little use but the effect on pubs when people use voice is really dramatic. I’d be surprised if the game ships without it, seems to be a standard feature these days.

Also I really hope the voicecomm menus improve. Especially if SD is doing voicework now. I just feel like they’re so useless. Lots of really generic voicecomms that are basically meaningless (“I’m attacking”, “I’m defending” - really?), while it’s missing important things like “THEY’RE PLANTING C4” or even a simple “incoming” (what the hell does “incoming fire” even mean? artillery?) … anyway, yeah… I really dislike the current voicecomms… except for v63.

I personally would approve of an in game voice chat of some sort. It would help not only organize players in game but strengthen the community.
On the flip side its another way for angry player to curse out others. It may help at first, but as with consoles players will most likely opt for private means of voice chat later.

(biz) #32

it works great in quake wars

99% of players probably aren’t in clans using some 3rd party software…

(Seanza) #33

I have mine disabled in ET:QW. Only enable for FT now and then if I’m playing with mates who aren’t on TS or if I want to say something private to them

(Ashog) #34

Coward!!! :stuck_out_tongue:

(Seanza) #35

Can’t be bothered with all the people who take is super serious and raging at people for nothing when they’re getting newbie of the battle etc.

(Ashog) #36

Actually that’s the most fun part! And you missed it all!

Or it might be you, taking all the misc. raging too seriously

(fubar) #37

I can see the use and allure, but personally never been a fan of it and never will. In fact this is one of the few things I disable, instantly, before even bothering to get into any public game (if I’m aware of the feature, such as CS series or other bigger hits steam). However, if you do implement it a way to disable it or mute one and another whilst in-game with a few clicks would be highly recommended. From what I’ve seen and heard amongst console gamers, CoD heroes take this to the very next level, and I really wouldn’t want to be conversing with the likes of these: http://gamerfury.tumblr.com/

We absolutely need this! The implementation for ETQW was perfect.

The problem with VOIP in many games, is that the microphone is auto-enabled by sound, by default, instead of push-to-talk. With this, I always end up disabling it, because you fast come across some dumb inconsiderate* ****, who either listens to music, or have the TV running, or playing at the family computer (with people around him,) etc.

*It is actually the software developers that are being inconsiderate for implementing VOIP with Voice Activation included. Way to wing-cap an otherwise great feature as VOIP!

Voice Activation is a no no.

(Runeforce) #40

Completely agree. You should not even have the option to enable VA. You could not in ETQW.
