Inspiration?

Heya,

Looking forward to playing this game, I was just wondering if this short movie was the inspiration for the game/design?

Does anyone know?

Wow, I’ll never get those 5 mins back :frowning:

I very much doubt it. How old is that movie? They’ve had the concept for Brink since prior to ETQW afaik from the interviews I’ve read so far.

This, what an awful movie

It was a great video…

Nothing to do with Brink though.

It looked nice, but it was horrible.

(tokamak) #6

Loved it. The other one with the alien is even better.

I’m curious if anyone who watched it can articulate why they liked it or not. That would bring a more interesting discussion to the table, at the very least.

The best thing is the animation, in every way it tries to conceal that it’s has anything to do with computers, it rather wants to be seen as clay or puppet animation.

The virus invading the cell and the boats landing on the island was pretty striking as well.

As for the ending, it was unnecessary, also stolen from Fight Club.

Mmm don’t think it was stolen from Fight Club, but it would have been better if it just ended with the sound of a gun blast.

Pretty well done overall, I really liked the look of the environment and the atmospheric lighting.

No more stolen from fight club than fight club’s plot twist is stolen from, say, the wizard of oz, etc…

I just found it pointless. Nothing was lost and nothing was gained. I finished watching it and didn’t feel… anything.
It seemed very drawn out. That whole clip I think could have been 1/5 the length and wouldn’t have lost anything, but would have made it more bearable to watch.

Edit: Points though since it reminded me of Tool

(tokamak) #12

I’m talking about the Fight Club book, not the movie.

(BioSnark) #13

Sure, and I still disagree with it

And my review of the film?
Good world and setting with good visual color choices and visual and sound quality to support it but weak story. The twist at the end was completely unnecessary. The film spent a lot of time introducing a very well detailed and tonal world and throwing it away at the end also just completely ditches the viewers investment in that world and gives the feeling that it was a waste of time doing so.

Some character design criticisms:

  • Pointy ears seems to imply fairytales, not apocalypse. Detracted from the mood.
  • The lack of texture on the greasy hair very distinctly did not match the quality of the rest of the character or scene as the character is introduced. Also detracted from the tone of the film.

(tokamak) #14

Absolutely, that’s what I was trying to say in a less elaborate fashion. Absolutely ANY movie can end with that finale.

(light_sh4v0r) #15

I disliked the movie because the plot was nonexistent. (for no reason he decides to commit suicide, then changes his mind for again no reason to commit suicide outside instead.) For the entire movie you had no idea what was going on and at the end it appeared to be nothing because the dude was mad. I don’t see how that’s interesting to watch. The animation was rubbish, although the scenery was much better, I’ll admit that.

I feel much like what Lyndon said, it didn’t do anything with me.

Very well done.
I think it was suppose to provoke good ,bad or indifferent feelings, and it did just that. Guys got a serious dark side going on.
It looks like its got a little hyper realism art style in spots. Looks good to me.
The ending ties in with the Shakespeare quote in the beginning.

(engiebenjy) #17

I liked it, the whole feeling of getting the virus and knowing you needed to take your own life for the good of others. Art style was very nice too.

(BioSnark) #18

Yes, the quote was interesting. The description was interesting. “Oblivious to the true nature of the disease, the only remaining survivors escape to the sea.” I thought the Shakespeare quote worked just as well with the first ending without the drawbacks I mentioned previously.
