Info about b&w graphic mod

(nUllSkillZ) #1

Hi,

I’ve remebered a mod that only uses black and white colors.
I don’t know the name but I think it is for “Half-Life”.
And so I’ve tried to do the same wit ET.
Intention has been to let ET look like old black and white movies.
I’ve greyscaled about 97% of all the graphics.
But it doesnt’t look as good as I’ve thought.
One of the reasons is the lightning in the levels.
Colored lights are still colored.
And influence the texture around them.
I think this only can be achieved by changing the engine.
This is only to inform those who had or will have the same idea.

The common answer is that the people in a war see it in colour, not black and white. It’s OK for a movie, but a not an FPS.

All of the stock maps in ET have external lightmaps–try grayscaling the static lightmap textures in maps/<mapname>/lm_*.tga. This will not change the color of dynamic lights created by weapon shots and such, but as I recall, ET lets you change those in the external .weap definitions (weapons/*.weap.)

Thanks for the tip.
Will try this.

I’ve grayscaled the lightmaps too.
Unfortunately everything looks “green-ish” now.
With some textures in plain gray.

Hmm… Weird.

Could you take a screenshot of that?

the colorful bits are vertex-lit. You’d need to recompile the maps with desaturated lightsources in order to get what you’re looking for…

btw, this idea seems kind of silly to me…

To make a mod who shows all in b/w is a funny idea, but it would look a little bit better in Sepia.
Try B/Works 1.0 Stand-Alone (Freeware) to change the color of the Textures into Sepia.

Ummm, remember to greyscale the player models aswell

(nUllSkillZ) #11

I’ve greyscaled all of the graphics including the player skins.
It has just been an idea.
As I’ve said above inspired by another mod I’ve read something about.

Edit:

I’ve just had a quick look at the mentioned program BW.
But I guess I can’t use this one.
Because some of the “.tga”'s have an alpha channel.
And I think this program doesn’t save “.tga”'s with alpha channel.

(Mr_Tickles) #12

Hmmm, could there be a way of doing this via altering what the player sees by way of using a mod. If you could do that , maybe a film grain effect could be added?

(nUllSkillZ) #13

I will definetly not decompile any maps.
Because I can not achieve what I’ve wanted to achieve I will not spent more time to this modification.

(Mr_Tickles) #14

Don’t give up so easily, there may be another way of doing what you want to achieve… Now, I have no idea about modding… but can’t you get the players view as they are running around in the level and then greyscale that?
Or, you could go further back and ask everyone to attach black and white monitors to their computers… sorry. Yeah, is there a way of getting the players screen?

(nUllSkillZ) #15

To render greyscale the engine has to be changed (I think).
But the source of the engine is not released.

Put a little textfile to your mod: “If you like to run this mod, simple start your Enemy Territory and turn the color settings of your monitor to black and white!” scnr
