In-your-face shotgun Proxy is really fun to play... what's the beef with shotgun loadouts?

(SzGamer227) #1

It may be because I’m a Fletcher main who doesn’t mind using shotguns anyways, but I tried out using my Obsidian Culprit H11 loadout and found that playing shotgun Proxy is not bad… in fact, I found the fast-paced decision making and immediate consequences involved in run-and-gun close-quarters shotgun Proxy to be a refreshing deviation from how I normally play, and I daresay I enjoyed it more than playing Proxy with a Hochfir.

So what is everyone’s beef with playing shotgun Proxy? I haven’t heard anyone on the forums say they prefer shotgun loadouts to Hochfir ones, yet when I said how much I enjoyed it in-game, immediately someone else said “Yeah, I only ever use her shotgun loadouts… she’s very fun to play”. Is a requirement to being on the forums having a grudge against shotguns? Am I going to get banned for this? D:

Seriously, I’d like to hear what your experience with shotgun vs. Hochfir Proxy is. Have you tried both and just prefer one to the other? Have you never tried shotgun because you’re too used to automatic weapons? Because I used to be in the latter category, avoiding shotgun loadouts because I was so used to using SMGs. I equipped my Hollunds card just for the hell of it 'cuz I thought I should at least give it a try, and… well I’ve already explained it to you. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

So? What say you?

Used to hate shotguns, but now I like the Ahnuhld and the Hollunds. A31 Fletcher is so good, I think trading away some range efficiency is worth the devastation that the Ahnuhld can cause, won waaay too many fights in one or 2 clicks which I should have lost. On Proxy I just switch between Hollunds and Hochfir, both are fine guns.

I like some range viability in my play. I take the smg alternative on Aura, Fletcher, and Proxy.

If I shotgun, Hollunds FTW!

I hate using shotguns for a non conventional reason.
I don’t like playing stuff I hate fighting against and seeing as I see shotguns as OP let alone the mercs that use them as one of the more annoying mercs to fight against I just don’t like em.
My signature basically shows my thoughts about those things

i hate shotguns because i can try to shoot a string of headshots, but they just jump around and 2 shot me, leaving them with abut 10% health. IMo, thats not fair. but like i said, just my opinion.

I’ve been taking my two Remburg cards for spins, and I have enjoyed the fast paced Proxy gameplay. It’s surprised me. Took a bit to suck down my ego and admit, “Hey, this is better than I gave it credit for.” I don’t typically play her, but would always use a Hochfir Card, preferably with chopper. I barely liked the Hollunds and despised the Remburg before, but now I’m finding both shotties a-ok. It’s not my favorite gameplay, and I still find myself thinking “Geez, if I had a Hochfir right now…” and then having to adapt and/or just deny myself what I’d typically do.

Overall:

 • 7/10 experience (with base DB gameplay being close to 10)

Pros

 • Good for flanking, which I enjoy doing
 • Fast paced, and due to considering my range more often I tend to dictate when more battles happen
 • Devastating damage on the enemy when you bait them, mine or not
 • I enjoyed it

Cons
[] Head on typically is a bad experience since you first have to close the gap, and take damage while doing so. (Longer range wep = staying farther, less distance closing)
[
] Getting caught in the enemy fray when trying to utilize the shotty range
[] Harassing people medium to long distance from you is less effective, but will still garner enough attention for you to be injured
[
] I found myself wishing for just a bit more range/flexibility on any map I play
I agree on this point as well. Using other weapons vs shotty users can be brutally annoying, especially since they don’t feel to have proper range falloff.

Pepole either hate shotguns because they have an insanely low skill floor or some others think they’re weak against pepole who get constant headshots with other weapons.

Here,on one side, you got that >t dude playing aura 1 clicking everyone with a cobalt hollunds Aura (legit happened to me),but on the other hand, you got the average Joe that has a lot of trouble doing the same thing with the same loadout.

Proxy Ahnuhld loadout WHEN

(AnonOmis1000) #10

I don’t care for shotguns just because I suck balls with them. I do use them though, and have fun doing so often.

I simply find myself in too many situations where I would have won range fights if I wasn’t saddled with a short range shotgun. I don’t mind the Ahnuld but even it is medium range only.

Most of the time people hate on them because they are still fairly accurate while hopping so they get a pretty bad reputation due to that.

(solace_) #12

I think most people hate shotguns because they can be overpowered in certain situations with very little counter-play. In other words, they are annoying to play against. Personally, I do not have a huge beef with them, but yeah, they can be hella annoying sometimes.

(AnonOmis1000) #13

Same can be said about sniper rifles, just the other end of the range spectrum

the reason I don’t care about sniper rifles is because they actually take skill to use whereas shotguns can be used by anyone and are very noob friendly. Like I said, they have very little counter play, snipers however, are easier to counter and maneuver around if your team is competent. That’s why I don’t mind snipers but have a bit of a gripe with shotguns.

(sagaciousHarp) #15

I love using them. One has to realize that they require a VERY different play style, hence you get people that don’t want to adapt/change and the shit talking about them. Proxy hollunds/lock on is so fun, and ahnuld Fletcher can shit all over SMG users if employed correctly, inside its effective range (which is much longer than players realize.)

(frostyvampire) #16

I enjoy shotguns more, when I opened my obsidian I was praying that I don’t get a Hochfir because I wouldn’t use it.
I hate it when shotgun mercs (Proxy, Fletcher, Aura) use SMG’s. Sniper mercs use sniper rifles (I know Grandeur and Dreiss are not really snipers but they are kinda similar), rifle mercs (fire support + some of the assault ones) use assault rifles, SMG mercs use SMG’s. Then why is Rhino the only shotgun merc that can’t use SMG? Why does Proxy have a hochfir instead of Ankhuld (whatever it’s spelled)? Why doesn’t Fletcher have a Remburg and Aura Ankhuld instead of a Blishlok?

Also shotguns are a lot better than SMG’s. They deal a lot more damage and they are more effective, they can even 1 shot kill most mercs (it doesn’t always even has to be a headshot). While SMG’s have more DPS, they still deal very low damage and they are not really good at a long range fight and any rifle can easily take you out before you do much damage. Let’s take MOA SNPR-1 and Crotzni, Crotzni has a high fire rate and high DPS but low damage, MOA can only fire once every second but it’s an instant kill on 90% of the mercs (if you hit the head) and instant finish on downed enemies, with the Crotzni you need to waste at least half of your clip before you get the kill and another 10 bullets or so to finish, so it’s basically 1 clip for 1 kill. MOA needs 2 bullets to kill, 2/6 = 1/3, so it’s 1 clip 3 kills. Remburg has 5 shots in a clip, you can kill an enemy with 1 shot in the head (some times in the body too) or 2 shots in the body, since shotguns are used in close range anyways, you can easily knife them to finish
The only upside of SMG’s is that you don’t need to aim, spray and pray works with them, with shotguns you actually need to aim. But come on we are talking about a competitive game, just learn to aim and you will understand how shotguns are 1000 times better

(watsyurdeal) #17

I personally just find them far too limiting, we have a lot of maps with open areas and not much for urban or close quarters scenarios where the Shotguns should shine.

Imo, they’re not worth using over the SMGs if you can use em. Not even machine pistols can make up for their shortcomings, though I would totally use a single shot double barrel as a secondary.

This, this, and this. Shotguns deserve far more spread increase for bunny hopping
