Here are 2 articles I wrote up on Brink -
http://www.fragworld.org/frag/community-blogs/brink-updates-from-quakecon-and-gamescom.html
http://www.fragworld.org/frag/community-blogs/brink-updates-from-pax-10-and-ege.html

The info in them is known to a lot of you guys, and the first one is a bit dated, but I figured I’d post them regardless.

(tokamak) #365

Rated them

There was some new stuff in it for me, but that might be because I haven’t been paying attention.

Brink has kind of been on the back burner in the gaming world for a little bit, but has recently picked up steam

Cringeworthy pun H0RSE :stuck_out_tongue:

“doing it for the hardcore”

I sorry, I don’t see “hardcore” support:
VOIP is on – never seen a good clan using it. Most of a time its TS, Vent, etc.
Friendly fire is on – it’s a default for SD games
the intel system off – “which helps struggling players” u mean 8 years old?

Only 1 thing I really liked -
“Instead everything the SMART button can do you can do yourself with a combination of the sprint button, the jump button, and the crouch button.” – But still, never saw how it works, and I’m not soured it will be working as planned. Only time will tell.

The support I want to see for “hardcore” :

  1. Early SDK release – give promod makers all the tools they need as fast as possible.
  2. Competitive system – I mean, the Brink is force players to play as a team, I hear it in every interview, but I never heard what players will do after they form a stable team. Ladders? Cups? Leagues?
  3. Tactical aspect – I want to see a lot strategy for every map. Like ET maps, or it will be a back step.

P.S. may be diaries for PS3 only. dunno

An internal ladder system would be really cool. It doesn’t have absolute priority, but it’s something I’d like to see as DLC.

Obviously. There’s no such thing as ventrillo on PS3, that’s why it’s judged on it’s VOIP.

  • in game VOIP obviously is for the console versions, PS3 moreso because it doesn’t have the party support of 360. You won’t have to use it, and obviously in a group of friends or clan you will never use the ingame VOIP on PC so it doesn’t even apply to you. It is a selling point on consoles though.
  • You can’t even see a positive that you can toggle assist systems off to open the game up to more people? I think that is ridiculous. Sounds like you want the game to be so hardcore it alienates much of the possible audience, which SD has already expressed an intention of expanding with this title. You have your toggles, set them how you like for your own servers and games and let the poeple who want/need them have them. I would rather SD make the game accessible and customizable rather than cater to a minority of gamers while alienating everyone else, especially while making their first multiplat game, which also happens to be a new IP.
  1. Quite possible still.
  2. You really expect them to announce ladder and league info before they even have a release date set for the title?
  3. What that you have seen so far makes you think these maps will be dumbed down or a step back?

(tokamak) #370

It’s just like any other feature in the game. Don’t underestimate the amount of people that look for competitive capacities. Dang, never thought I would actually say that.

(Maawdawg) #371

I am not doubting that tons of people will be looking for highly competitive action in Brink. I would like to see that info too but given the game is 6-ish months out, they just stopped calling it Alpha phase in interviews recently, and doesn’t even have a solid release date set is it really fair (or logical) to expect that info to be out already?

We have seen a lot of the same info in most of these articles and just because we don’t have info on tournaments and ladders and if/when a SDK release will hit six months prior to release doesn’t mean SD hasn’t considered their implementation or worked on them yet. They are things that don’t get worked on (as much) during early development. The things that get added later have their info released later. Art, story, and game mechanics come first and that is why that is what the majority of info we have is about. As it is we are only just getting into the finer gameplay elements in bits because the game was still being pared and refined to get to Beta stage (most likely).

If they are smart they aren’t going to give hard info on later added elements and high end competition information before the build is set and they have it figured out. Companies that comment too early or speculate about what they “should have at release” are the ones that end up with piles of broken promises and “we had to cut that” explanations after release, and the flak that comes along with it.

That is my way of looking at the level of info we have thus far, anyway.

(potkettleblack) #372

Actually Wedgwood has been quoted in saying, they have a few things in the works regarding tournament / competitive play. He mentioned that their inhouse guys are very much into that.

Whether he was talking crap or their agenda changed since then, is another thing.

It seems to me that you are mixing up “hardcore” with “prickish, PC elitist.” As was mentioned earlier - you appear to want the game to be so “hardcore” that it only caters to a handful of players.

(Kinjal) #374

Sorry I don’t think it’s a best thread for discussion and I don’t want create a new one just for my thoughts. May be we can create some sort of “news discussion” thread?

I don’t have a scanner. It’s a DVD box insert, they’re not that amazing. I have a photo anyways.

Nothing new. I was just mentioning that they’re advertising with their other products. Here’s a photo to make my post more interesting.
