In search of Competition maps

I would like to see new maps in competition.

In short, if you have made a map(s) for competition, please post a link to the thread or download.

And post some information on it

edit: maps that are suited to 3v3 will be considered for a 3v3 league which I am an admin of ( http://www.austourney.com/ ). And if I see any good 6v6 maps I’ll push to have them included in other leagues.

Every season, every league, they ask for suggestions for competition maps. People propose maps, people complain and bitch about maps, leagues cave and go back to playing the same maps.

If, i think it would be nice to support Der’Saidin and not hijack his thread for whining. We did that a lot in the etscene thread, now its time to be supporting or just let it be.

Actually, I don’t think I’m whining. I’m all for support and even submitted a map for the et-scene contest. However, I’d still like to know what difference he thinks this will make. Pretty simple question.

I thought the lists of potential comp-worthy maps that Dragon and Hiroshima made for the GameArena leagues, were very well put together and assembled with community input. Why not use that list and add to it? I remember TWL and CAL assembling a couple of similar lists, with map descriptions, etc.

Personally, it would be a great thread if he went, grabbed and combine some of those threads, indicated where each map had been played (so that leagues can see which have been played in other places) and then ask here for updates, changes, and additions. That would actually capture a ton of maps by mappers who aren’t active here anymore.

AusTourney is a 3 v 3 comp based on promoting 3 new customs maps each season.

Last month we had Adlernest_b5 (dersaidin’s creation)
Frost_beta3

as our new custom maps, however this season we are looking for more. We do not think of this as just collating a list of maps, but more of a map exposure for budding mappers.

Half those maps are best suited to a 64player server. Not competition maps.

The other half, I dont know if they’re 3v3 or 6v6.

Also, that list is far from compleat, and I dont think its very likely that it will be updated by any gameops (Hiro has rerited as a gameop)…

Thats what I want, listing the leagues that the map has been used in would be a good adition.

ifurita, in your opinion, how would vengeance go for 3 v 3?

Probably not well. I think the multiple avenues of approach may be problematic for 3 v 3, where as with 6 vs 6, you can split up a little more and still be effective.

On second thought - and you’d have to run around it a bit to develop your own opinion:

Phase 1: Would work ok

Phase 2: Defense might have to give up phase 2 in order to prevent a split attack on the controls and the hanger (e.g., having an engy wait at the hanger doors for a successful cap, where D could not fall back effectively to prevent the plant). Alternatively, they could leave 2 D on the controls while 1 falls back to protect the hangers

Phase 3: This might work out OK

I remember a tournament edition of venice.
And from another map that’s in my mind I haven’t got the name.
Will have a look at etmaps.de.

Edit:

RAW Castle is the name of the map.
There’s is a tournament edition.

And I’ve found:
Ammo Bunker (Beta 1) a small map that could be suited for 3 vs. 3 and Berserk Tournament Edition.

Only had a look at the maps from 1 to E at etmaps.de until I’ve remembered the name of the map.

That was te_venice_rc2 and it was played in the US. Some servers in Europe tried to make it popular (bio for example) but they didn’t succeed. Its def a nice map with tactical variation… probably too much tactical options for simpleminded comp gamers :bump:

I really like the look of cathedral_final, and even though the timings seem ok, I’m concerned the big ‘feel’ that the architecture can give may turn some people off

I’ve had a run around Sabotage and wasn’t that impressed, but it’ll be interesting to see how it goes. Ironically for a comp player, I feel it’s a little boring :F

Anyhow, I’m one of the admins at GameArena in Australia, where we have 50+ teams competing in our sixth ET season. This is where Ders hails from, and where Hiro did some fine work before he retired some months ago. Ifurita, I don’t remember seeing a list of comp-worthy maps that Hiro compiled - although there is a list of maps in the latest GA mapppack plus a few maps in development that Hiro liked.

Anyhow, as for admins ‘caving in’, I do admit that plenty of customs have been tried and then removed at GA -

Caen //Season 2 - then dumped, you’d probably agree it’s not suitable for SW
MML Church //S2 - Was very rarely played, I’ve played 2 league games on it and that’s the record for one player…not great for 7o7/6o6, but 3v3 I think would suit
Password2 //S2 + S4 & S4 finals - Decent map, pps seem to have a love/hate r/ship with it…close to inclusion for S6
TC_Base //S2 + S4 - RTCW base port, not that suitable for ET imho
V2base TE //S3 - Ironically brought in by popular vote, imho because ppl believed it was a RTCW port (Hiro pulled a shifty :p) Didn’t favour offence…
Stalingrad //S3 + S3 finals - Not very popular, mineable OBJ’s + some fps issues maybe? Dropped after S3
Venice rc2 //S3 - Beautiful map, but doesn’t seem to play out that well. Poor poll results.
Rommel_GA //S4 - Didn’t prove popular
Beerrun //S4 - Removed after that season due to poll results showing it was rated good by just ~20% of pps
Dubrovnik_etc //S4 - Another decent map that just seems to have something lacking, average poll results brought about it’s demise although it’s popularity has seemed to increase
Raw Castle TE //S5 - We thought it might go okay, but it wasn’t popular and probably isn’t up to scratch
Rochelle //S5 - High hopes, but turned out to be too difficult for Allies - cut 1/2 way through season

Maps we’re running now:

Supply Depot //Has been included since S2, hugely popular
Frostbite //Has been included since S2, extremely popular
SOS Secret Weapon //Has been included since S3, incl final matches, reasonably popular
SP Delivery //Has been included since S4, incl final matches, quite popular
ET Ice //Has been included since S5, incl finals matches
Reactor Final //New to S6, older version was used in S4
Braundorf B4 //New to S6, _b2 played last season & in finals. Has been played more this season
ET Beach//New to S6 - Has been quite popular
Adlernest B5 //New to S6, & hasn’t been played much yet…but it takes time

We’ve tried to give customs exposure by making customs part of the finals series’, and I ran a couple of custom map exhibtion games before this season, where Reactor, Adlernest, River II Redux, Dubrovnik, and et_beach got some exposure. Finals + exhibition matches are ETTV’d.

Dersaidin: When we add the new mappack I plan to revamp/supersede the thread you linked to

PS. I suggested sub and MML Church for 3o3 somewhere else Ders - you might consider at least testing those maps for austourney play

Special Delivery (also known as simply Delivery)

Players: 6v6 (though I saw it running on a 32v32 server once, heh)
Filename: sp_delivery2.pk3
Spawntimes: Allied: 20, Axis: 20
Timelimit: 15 (I recommend a 10 minute timelimit when used in competition)
Used in leagues: Most, if not all.

I’m also the original creator of Dubrovnik. I created the docks and a street with a couple of buildings, mainly as a styling excercise back when I was first learning Radiant. Ifurita and I know each other from when we were on the same RtCW team (www.wolfjaeger.com) years back, and he really liked the style so he asked if he could finish what I started - I agreed. In the end I’m only responsible for maybe 4% of the finished product. I only mention this because I’m a bit embarassed by Special Delivery and feel like maybe mentioning I had a hand in Dubrovnik will give me some ‘street cred’ with the mapping community, heh.

It’s not that I feel Special Delivery is a bad map - I’m acctualy quite happy with the way it plays, and it seems like a lot of people enjoy it since almost every league has it in regular rotation now a days - it’s just that on a technical level it’s really quite poor. No lighting, crude outdoor areas, etc… I’ve always been a bit ashamed of it. Some of that was by design - for instance, I wanted players to be reminded of Supply Depot (the only custom map really accepted in competition at that time) when playing it and so purposly made the outdoor areas similarly simple/crude, I even used Supply Depot’s textures! And some of it wasn’t by design - the reason it has no lighting is because I only had seven weeks to build the map from scratch before TWL’s preseason started, and while I had finished most of it in just four weeks, it took me still three more weeks of scrimming it to get the gameplay fine tuned.

Apple don’t worry about that, comp players don’t care about visual details. They want small maps with simple patterns & high FPS.

I still think Iffy’s Rochelle should be considered! Played it in our cup, people liked it.
