In-game PugBot

(coolstory) #1

The idea’s pretty simple, a pugbot in the game menu. Instead of it on irc or on a site. Most new players dont know about IRC, or might not take the time to get it.

Just like SD wants to encourage single players to try multilayer an in game pugbot system would make it easier for pub players to try out the comp. side.

How is that different from a lobby?

(Wolfmeister) #3

If you can find a specific lobby and linger in it, theres no difference.

Add an official SD Ladder (like developer A-net does with Guild Wars) and a way to setup an official Ladder match through the Vote system and im happy

Take the cues from battle.net when it comes to matchmaking. It’s gorgeous.

(Wolfmeister) #5

Tokamak, is there any way to see how Battle.net works? (without buying SC2)
I guess i wont use it until Diablo3 comes out myself.

(Szakalot) #6

you could buy SC1

(Wolfmeister) #7

I REALLY suck at RTS games, so no

(coolstory) #8

like a public lobby in l4d? Cause there’s almost no team work involved in pubs, plus with the addition of greifers stat whores etc. While in a pug there’s more team work involved as every1’s playing with a common goal.

(BioSnark) #9

So your saying it’s better than the public lobby system because it’s much less public so it should be made more public?

(AnthonyDa) #10

The 4v4 matchmaker in L4D(2) is really good idea to find match/clanwars quickly
Yet, I don’t think that BRINK competition (if there is any) will use an 8v8 format, so there is no need of a such a feature (or a pugbot) until the competition rules are sets.

(maxtalent) #11

I have no idea what a pugbot is

(INF3RN0) #12

Que with your friends and have fun.

(AnthonyDa) #13

Google is your friend…

(coolstory) #14

Its better than a public lobby because in it most people just wanna pub, they dont care about working as a team. They’ll just leave whenever they feel like, might wanna grief or hack.
But in a pickup game (pug) its more like a scrim between 2 teams.

A pugbot is an IRC bot that allows people to experience the team work and organized gameplay that happens when 2 comp. teams scrim/play each other.

It’ll make it easier for new players to try out comp. play.

As bio pointed out. It works because you have to actively join IRC with those intentions. When you add it to the game it falls foul of all the flaws you point out for lobby systems.

If anything you’d just want more descriptive lobby types to hopefully channel players of different needs to the right place.

Yes there is

It’s not entirely an accurate comparission as brink is always fought 8v8 instead of variations, but you get the idea.

Well what can i say? that looked VERY impressive

Given understandable polish and a few features how is Battle.Net any different from Steam/Steamworks?

And the matchmaking, from the video you seem to select your gametype (invite friends) and it then matches you up to another player/team. So it’s a lobby system without the lobby?
