Improving the Loadouts System

(AlbinMatt) #1

(I frankly don’t know if this fits in merc discussions, so I’ll put it in General for the time being.)

First off, I’d like to say that I adore DB’s loadouts system. It feels like it has almost hit that sweet spot between incentivized (is that even a word?) upgrades, and personal cosmetic customization. Still, I feel like we can do better. I’m going to be honest and say that I have only very recently enjoyed playing Dirty Bomb (late November), so I’ve never experienced the Trading system, and I am severely biased regarding the Crafting system as it has given me great Bronze loadouts, of which I still use to this day. Even with my bias and newbie status, I can certainly say that Dirty Bomb is missing some key features to make this system better, for both the players, and for us.

1. Add A Marketplace
Yeah so, I’m ripping this idea straight from Volvo, but seeing the remarkable success they’ve had, I wouldn’t doubt Splash Damage to benefit from this system. What I mean by a “marketplace” is basically allowing the trade of cards (maybe other goods) between players, with use of in-game credits as currency. I am a hair away from flunking first grade economics, but even I know that adding a market feature will boost the players to gain additional loadout cards, because now all cards have value, even the ones they don’t want, since those cards can be used to trade and get the cards they do want. With the current system, newer players may be “scared” to use the crafting system, in case they don’t get the card they want, but by adding value to all cards as a trading commodity, more people are willing to use the system, or pay huge cash to get high value cards as trade fodder i the community marketplace (that’s going to sound like Gambler’s Fallacy, and to a certain demography, Sunk Cost Fallacy, which means more money, which means .shoe gets to eat)

2. Allowing Community Contributions
OK, so by this point you’re going to realize that I want to turn DB to CS:GO, but hey that’s why we are having a discussion. I have seen some talented souls conjure up magic in the Fan Creations sect, such as writers (which I have previously discussed), and more relevantly, artists. So far, the notable ones I’ve seen are @Shinywindow and @BooryDarthNader. These people have made some really nice drawings, and concept arts, and I’m sure SD won’t mind to put them in the game. There are loads of art geeks out there, and allowing community contributions would certainly attract some of them to Dirty Bomb, plus we get to enjoy more skins, and make the marketplace flourish. I’m thinking that community cards (if we do get them) should be at a minimal Bronze to Cobalt and so Splash Damage’s art team can crank more time for maps and event skins.

These ideas are very raw, but this community has baked some really nice buns, so I’d really love your take on this. I don’t quite understand the etiquette regarding contacting SD employees on the forums, but I’m sure the community would like to hear what @Djiesse has to say about this.

-I remember hearing SD wanted to add a card trading system based on the steam market, but I haven’t heard anything from it.

-I think a good step to take would be the devs using some fan-made skins every now and then. I don’t know how CS;GO works in full, never played it, but I don’t think the game should be flooded with hundreds of new skins. Just a couple, so SD can spend less time making them for events and whatnot.

I feel so flattered

I definitely want a Marketplace and Trading for this game. It’s gone well in TF2, so I think it may work here too. I’d love to try to contribute alternate merc skins, cosmetics and whatnot too, but I’m not workshop level good, so they might not be that well made :stuck_out_tongue: But I can see Shiny contribute a lot of stuff in the workshop if they ever release one.

If they introduce trading, they will need to upper the rarity of silver+ cards or add new rarities that are rarer than cobalt.

I don’t want to see my shard F82 Aimee being sold for 5$ on the market

Please stop calling Valve -> Volvo, it’s very demeaning to Volvo*

“add new rarities that are rarer than cobalt.”

there’s already Obsidian ( I have 6 :stuck_out_tongue: )

  • had Volvos for 37 years, XC70 now

I was actually thinking that Bronze would be a nice tier to start off on. We would have about 4 rarities to choose. This way, the devs can fit more types of artworks. Still I personally think that a new set of loadouts would work better for the separate market, as to leave the original artwork from the devs untouched, but certainly not a new, rarer, tier from Cobalt. I had the idea that post level 10, you get to unlock the marketplace (as to prevent those whiny low levels from calling the game pay to win), and from there, you can get equipment cases from a “black market” that “contraband dealers” work in. This kind of adds the sense that Splash Damage’s original skins are MercSERV’s solders, so they have limited weapons and outfits, but then you find this whole new underground network of contrabands (community creations) where every gun and article of clothing is garishly painted, or finely hand-crafted.

My main fear of this system is that Dirty Bomb may suffer from TF2’s aesthetic issue, where every player may look unique and interesting, but at the cost of the games art them and consistency. I mean, just imagine a Skyhaggis running around cosplaying William Wallace, wielding a Scottish M4 with “ALBA GU BRATH” splattered all over it, whilethe rest of the game is just a bunch of Proxies with their nuke pancakes painted as the Union Jack. It would be an absolute mess, and an abandonment of DB’s original art scheme.

  1. I live very far from Europe, so I’m kind of jellatonously jelly that I don’t get to enjoy Volvo’s stuff, and am stuck using Japanese cars. Nothing wrong with them, just that I sound like a weeabo when talking about cars. Not a big nerd on automotives either.

  2. I highly disagree with the idea of a tier higher than Cobalt to be used for community creations. I had already talked about this on my other comment.

  3. 6 Obsidians? How? I can only recount the Alpha Founder’s pack, and Roxy’s Culprit card to be Obsidian grades.

Well, you’r right about rarity, some ppl have tons of “best” cards for mercs they hate, they wouldn’t hesitate giving those up for people who actually love those mercs, so in the end people would have their desired cards far far more often

Sorry buddy but someone else buying that card for any amount of $ is not going to make your card any less blue.

But don’t worry, you will probably get what you want. Judging by everything SD has and hasn’t done regarding cards, cases and their RNG, if trading is finally introduced it will be limited to new cards created after trading (or just by relesing gen 3 and making the rest untradeable). Everything of course with players’ best interest in mind, to not disrupt the market etc :frowning:

there’s actually 8 ? , Founders (I got 5), Beta ( 1 ), then culprit and Phoenix, might be more, have to check with Dijesse

(Xenithos) #11

@AlbinMatt
There were 2 waves of Founder cards. One/(two? Doubting myself now) Alpha wave(s), and then a closed beta obsidian founders wave. There were a lot of obsidian cards to have, but I think they were limited to Fragger, Proxy, Sawbonez, Vassili, and Skyhammer…
Anyway, I don’t know what the max tier was for getting each wave (They let you pick each card you wanted out of the pool of possible ones, or get all of them if I remember correctly. Gosh it’s been like 4+ years), but I do recall the alpha cards looking much cooler than the beta obsidians. I didn’t get any because I was moving and even though I had an alpha Extraction key I was neck deep into MechWarrior Online at the time. Really wish I’d been with DB then. It’s still a fun game to me now and I’ve been playing steady for two years.

The Skyhammer, Proxy, and Sawbonez are by far the coolest looking cards. One of the Vassilis was really tight too. Some mercs were offerred at different times… such as the beta founders didn’t offer the same merc skins or the same merc choices as the founders did. As Nail said, Djiesse would have more details. I wouldn’t bother trying to get any though, none of those keys exist anymore, unless SD was secretly holding onto them. You would not believe how many low-level players there are that haven’t touched the game since closed beta, that have those cards.

(Nail) #12

only 1 “wave” of Founder’s Obsidians, the next was Beta Warrior Obsidian if you played one certain weekend, then Phoenix Obsidian if you owned or the merc if you didn’t, also a participation award, then Culprit from event

coolest looking imo

(ImSploosh) #13

I’m just upset we can’t get those beautiful founders cards anymore. I didn’t have a computer that could run the game at the time (had an alpha key or whatever). I also didn’t have any money at the time to purchase those founders cards. I’d pay double at this point for them lol.

I’m also mad that I purchased Vassili the day before the information about that Phoenix event came out. I wish I could get my hands on a Phoenix card.

Also, we have Containment War, What The Dickens, Rev, and now Ranked cards that are all more rare than Cobalt. We also have Obsidians of course. Then we have Humble Bundle, Alienware, and Logitech cards. So that’s 8 tiers above Cobalts as it is (all limited edition of course).

You may not be able to hear me, but my neighbourood just woke up at 3 in the morning to some kid jealously laughing to a virtual card in some obscure game.

I haven’t seen these in the Genome Project though…

So, yeah. I’m an idiot. The Genome projects has indeed collected those cards, I just looked at the wrong mercs.

(Hey Tep, if you see this, sorry for bothering you, I had to do it in the name of Father Kek, Son of Meme, and the Holy Pepe)

(AlbinMatt) #18

@ImSploosh @Nail Who else do you guys have on Founders? It seems that SD hadn’t quite shed their punk-rebel art style from Brink back then. Also, I saw Proxy’s Founders skin, she looked so cute, and symmetrical, with both her eyes, intact.

from a while back
