Importing models in radiant

(Bravo) #1

Radiant is a bugger of an application to use, at least for me it is anyway. There are so many easier ways to make 3d stuff. I have found anim8or the easiest 3d application to use out of the several I have tried over the years (mainly free ones, though I have tried pay ones on trial).

My question is can Radiant use any form of model that I can export from anim8or?

A current project I am embarking on is a real life map based on events on D-Day at the Merville Battery(only just started as a learn-as-I-go project, though the forum for it can be found here).

One of our clanmembers lives near Saint-Malo and went out and took some photos of a battery near there. I quickly knocked up a model of that battery based on his photos (only 5 minutes work, so don’t expect it to look brilliant). I came up with this:

I can export this in various formats, can any be used to good effect?

Formats:

C Source File
.3ds Format
.obj Format
.vtx Format
Anim8or Format

Would be interesting to find out at least…

misc_model import can be one of several file types including .obj and .3ds

good luck

How much support is there for obj? Texture/material wise?

(EB) #4

Seems to be little to none. (Remapping the obj causes my radiant to crash.)

Someone else on our clan forum made the attempt and got this:

The grey thing is the .3ds and the red thing is the .obj.

Apparently the textures don’t come through so good, oh well at least I can model stuff for maps, even if I can’t colour it in. I specialise in low poly modelling, which is a bit of a shame as the textures can make all the difference in low poly stuff.

Hmm, isn’t it possible to convert the model into a md3?

(Bravo) #7

Well the guy who is making the attempt (Weebull) has some application that converts .3ds to .md3.

I have given him the textures I used and he will attempt to recreate what I made. You can read of that attempt here.

“NPherno’s MD3 Compiler” can import 3ds models and export it to a md3 file. It’s easy to use and better: it’s free
