ok i know this is gonna make me sound stuiper than i already do, but i have been using radiant, and i still cant figure out how to do it properly…ok, at all! but i was wondering if there are any map editing lessons or like programs or manuals that teach you how to not be so retarded on mapping! helpo me please!
imanoob at mapping!
bubba’s tutorials helped me a lot in the beginning, even though they are mostly for quake 3, a lot of it is still good for rtcw/et

don’t try anything without giving a read to the Q3radiant manual that comes with Radiant. Some of the stuff in there is a little outdated but it will tell you all the basics and should get you going pretty well. When you’re done with that give a quick read at the shader manual that comes with radiant. Don’t try to learn all the keywords, just read the first part of the manual where it tells you the general stuff about shaders. Then once you’re done with those check out the READ ME sticky for additional tutorials. Then once you’ve gone through most of those you should consider yourself an intermediate mapper. Of course in the meantime if you have trouble understanding stuff you can always ask here. But don’t ask without first reading the manual. You’ll be suprised how informative it is.
P.S.
Map making with Radiant is very discouraging since for every 5 minutes of work you have to spend about 5 hours figuring out how to do it, and then once you’ve done it spend another 5 hours figuring out why it’s not working properly. If you stick to it though you’ll eventually start understanding.
i recomend these video tutorials (scroll down), they’re for quake but they help anyway. Also anyone interested in modeling with any other 3d aps should have a look here as well they have a massive list of tutorials
I tried to put together the following for the total noob:
- An overview of what the various menus in Radiant do:
http://planetwolfenstein.com/4newbies/radiant101.htm
- A list of the tutorials I found to be most useful
http://planetwolfenstein.com/4newbies/maplinks.htm
- A quick curriculum with links to take you from first brush to a ‘winable’ map
http://planetwolfenstein.com/4newbies/curriculum.htm
- Map-in-a-box, which is basically a prefab of all the entities you might need in a map to build stuff, capture a forward flag, and destroy 2 objectives
