If i have a outdoor map should make all buildings detail?

(Storm) #1

I’m worndering if making all buildings detail will help with vis and fps

Making all buildings detail would help in the BSP process, not making the map better for FPS. U need buildings and other stuff blocking the VIS to get better FPS. So i suggest using detail only for detail and leave the buildings walls to block the vis.

but couldnt you make all the buildings detail and then put Hint Brushes in the same place as all the buildings?
that would still make some leaf nodes there. and would result in faster fps.

Hint brushes don’t block vis.

Except in pathalogical cases, making things detail won’t help FPS. Whether something needs to be detail or depends entirely on your map.

Q3map treats common/hint brushes exactly the same way as structural brushes when creating the leave-nodes, because common/hint shader contains surfaceparm structural. Think of them as invisible structural brushes. Leaf-nodes are always made along the faces of structural brushes. Thus a hint brush is very helpful in controlling the portals and your PVS.

If u really wanna know how hintbrushes work check this out:

Not true. Hint brushes merely split the portals. Structral brushes both split the portals at their edges and no portals can exist inside a structural brush. This is the important bit - hint brushes contain portals! Adding a hint brush over a detail brush wall will not stop players seeing through the wall. If you want to do this (and it is a good approach to use) make your buildings detail, then add structural caulk brushes in the areas you need to block. Look for tutorials/articles about caulk hulking for more information.[/i]
