ideas from titanfall
who said anything about that?
I’m just saying requiring very advanced skills to complete a tutorial probably isn’t the best idea
Sorry, the way i read your post it came across as you can’t complete the tutorial so strafe jumping is just too hard for the masses. Personally i was never the greatest at strafe or trick jumping, but that didn’t stop me appreciating the fact that there where people who could do things that i couldn’t, nor did it materially exclude me from playing the game - the last point is the trick, you can still get from A to B, just maybe not as quick, or not via a particular route.

the tutorial was rly nothing special.simple standart.quake lives tutorial is in my point of view better, because it measures your skill.same with LoL

(DarkangelUK) #123

Sorry I need to disagree with you there. QL’s training gave you a map and told you to get from one end to the other, it in no way, shape or form told you HOW to get there. There’s a rocket jump map and a strafe map, there’s nothing that tells you how to RJ or how to strafejump. Titanfall at least literally told you how to wall run, double jump, chain jump then gave you a room that needed everything you had learned to be put together to reach the end.

(shaftz0r) #124

yeah i mean, the quake thing isnt a tutorial so much as training. it doesnt tell you the lines or how to really do anything, but thats kind of the point. not like you cant look on youtube.

(attack) #125

ok if i can motivate some guys i will do a test.
i will ask some players with no q3 background if they understand the game.

and btw im sick of getting told in every game how i move forward.
shooter control havent changed much.

(DarkangelUK) #126

That’s maybe the problem, it assumes you know what RJ’ing and strafing is and tells you to show your stuff. What about new users that know nothing of the ‘old times’? A game needs to draw people in and educate them… put them on the path to self knowledge. If someone doesn’t know that rocket jumping and strafe jumping exists, how will they know to research it? They meet a tutorial map that’s impossible to them and most people are put off instantly. I’m not saying it has to teach them everything there is to movement, not at all, all it has to do is make them aware of it so it can then tweak their interest and prompt them to investigate further.

(shaftz0r) #127

the only defense of it comes with a well balanced matchmaking/tier system that allows the player to learn and slowly get better without getting ****stomped around every corner. the issue with quake is that people have been playing for soooo many years the playing field is almost never even except in t1-2, which is where people who have no concept of rj’s and strafejumping wouls sit and most likely stay for a long time

(DarkangelUK) #128

But that’s the point, Quake Live was meant to bring Q3 to the masses, and instead of taking that opportunity to educate them on the intricacies of Q3 gameplay, it threw them in the deep end and told them to find their own way. I’m sorry but that’s completely the wrong direction to go if you want to expand your player and interest base.

(shaftz0r) #129

do you really thing a well constructed tutorial would help in any way? the games learning curve is so massive that i really dont think anything other than hours of playing or like we did in ET, put together a “help a noob” group, would really help too much.

(DarkangelUK) #130

That’s what I’ve been saying. All that needed to be construed is the knowledge that such a movement existed in the first place and some basic form of how to do it. In QL, at no point does it say “look down, press fire and jump at the same time”, equally in the strafe map there’s absolutely no mention of “hold forward + left strafe, mouse angle at 30 degrees, on impact snap mouse to counter angle and alternate strafe key + press jump”. I mentioned this already, it needs to let them know that something exists and introduce them to the very basics so it propels them onto the path of self discovery.

i can only speak for myself ,but i learnd gammajumping from other more advanced players and teached it by myself to a newer generation.(i was never good buit i tried to give smth back).in ns2 i got smbdy who teached me the basics…what i want to say is a nice community will always be the best trainingcenter.

you cant say the people wouldnt accept a hard game, look at dark souls.you have to show them that they like a hard game.
unfortunaly we have to get first with this game to a point where the people want to to play this game.
the straight line is missing, if SD ever would tell us what they want to get ,we maybe can help ,otherwise we can keep talking about thinks SD never tries,

Dark souls isn’t really a hard game. It is just tedious. And it has been always criticized for not teaching you the game systems better. It aims for a specific kind of audience and almost needlessly alienates another. It is a great game and I enjoy it. I have it on steam… one of 170+ games I don’t play enough lol… But I don’t think dark souls really says much in terms of mechanic difficulty other than not teaching you the basics (well and sometimes at all) to make people believe it is actually a hard game. The tedious factor comes in with respawning enemies, which is fine but going through trash does get a bit tedious at times.

(shaftz0r) #135

separate of your point, which is completely valid, this is how any high level player feels about bad maps and boring competition. this entire thread is about what to learn from titanfall, they incorporated a fairly complex movement system based on 3-4 jumps, EVERYWHERE. there isnt anywhere that you cant go if you can see it. it creates a feeling of freedom in a way that someone who can haul in quake feels. the smart system tried to make that happen in far too linear of a way, but it can be built upon easily if done right. is this that project, cant comment, but i think the basics are working here. shooting is fun for the most part, but the maps and an added learning curve needs to be implemented to have a long term fanbase.

Whoa there big man, at no point what so ever did I say people wouldn’t accept a difficult game, in fact I’ve been saying the exact opposite the whole time. I’m just saying that it would be a hell of a lot easier for people to accept it if they were made aware of exactly what it is they’re playing. You’re right, you had to learn from others about gammajump because nothing in the game told you that being able to jump like that even existed, that’s my point. Titnfall is a perfect example of throwing something different at players but making them aware of the basics so they can then teach themselves and improve.

ok than im sry.i shouldnt drink and post :D.

i forgot to say that the tjmod in et works rly fine.you can let show you the angle in which you have to move your mouse.you can even let you show when to press jump to overbounce.unfortunaly the mod is “relativly new” , would have helped me alot :D.

(Mustang) #139

tldr: verticality and advanced movement = fun gamer experience = players that get hooked = monies

(tokamak) #140

Looks exciting. Exactly my kind of game.
