Ideas For A New Market Garden

(jimerb) #1

Ok, just to get some idea’s going…

Here’s a few ideas that I believe would make Market Garden awesome on ET if it were ported over.

(Of course this also serves to gently prod Splashdamage in that direction. )

Please keep in mind that I’ve played this map thousands of times as it was the staple map of our community (Charter Miami.)

  1. Have an engineer able to damage the barbwire under the bridge so the defense has to constantly patrol it and repair it or it makes it easier to get to the water tower.

  2. Make the pillars on the bridge “Dynamitable” so engineers can focus on not only going after the main door but also directly blowing the bridge up. I would say Two dyno’s – one on each side of the bridge would be good. Axis engineers could repair each side but it should take a VERY long time.

  3. At the mansion, the brick wall near the radio should be able to be demolished. Again a plant there or MANY airstrikes should damage the wall but it could be repaird with a lengthy engineer effort by the allies.

  4. You should be able to drive the tanks over the bridge.

  5. Mines should not be plantable on hard surfaces. You should not be able to mine the walkway to the water tower.

  6. You should be able to blow a hole in the wall that takes you in the south entrance to the manson compound. The hole should be blown with a tank that sits in the warehouse gardens and shoots down the alleyway into the wall.

  7. Dare I say open up a new flank that goes from the Warehouse gardens to a new section by the bridge? Maybe where the little bell tower is that you can’t get too?

  8. The netting above the allied radio should not protect you from an airstrike.

Any others?

I don’t think Splash Damage needs any help or suggestions in creating fun maps for ET. Their track record is proven.

I get tired of coming to this forum, which is set aside for a community of mappers, and reading all this troll garbage of “bring over my clan/friend’s/mother’s favorite map to ET!!! That would be so kewl and 1337!!! I really love all the fun I used to have on tram/rocket/marketgarden! ET rocks!!!”

There have been many posts about this and sock has said there are no plans for a conversion of Market Garden. Use all that creative energy to create a new and exciting map for ET, that the world has never seen!

Everyone here is allowed to freely suggest or talk about their favourite maps and how they want them changed.

MG is a great map, you can tell there was a TON of effort put into making it not only playable, but fun to look at! I may be wrong here, but having the duel objectives located at the spawn point really makes for a great game, even on pub servers, with tons of sneaky neer action ;). If i were doing an ET map, i’d heavily consider something like this (maybe not a direct port, but at least try to keep the same kind of theme going)

This is what happens when you have 4 people working on the same map at the same time.

Sock (or anyone on the ET team that helped create MG): As long as the subject of MG has been raised… I have a question about the RtCW version of the map. Why did you make the bell tower beside the river unusable? It taunted me in my sleep . . .

Back on subject. The primary reason people would like to see an ET version of MG is that there is no dual-objective map currently available for ET. When a good dual objective map becomes available, I think the interest will cool a little. There will always be some who will agitate for it, but I think that chavo_one has a point in that the energy that would be put into porting the MG map to ET would be better spent creating a new one.

Since SD made MG as well as ET, it only seems to make sense that a port of MG is plausible. However, I do not think that the current incarnation of the RtCW is really a good codebase. I would love to see SD recreate a MG-type map for ET, but I think a simple port is a bad idea since MG was not designed to take advantage of the gameplay elements of ET. I think that a complete reworking of the map using similar but different features and gameplay would be a better idea. In essence, a new map based on the Arnhem storyline. So there would be a bridge, but not THE bridge. There would be a canal, but not THE canal. There would be a sewer, but not THE sewer. Street arrangement would be different. And so on. Even the objectives could change.

Yeah I think MG would be a fun pub ET map like it was on Charter Miami… Though hopefully this time around the admins aren’t assclowns like they are on that server… :disgust:

If anyone in splashdamage is reading this – is this post helping you decide to re-release the map for E.T.???

How bout a market garden themed campaign ?

Great potential there …

I had been thinking along lines of …
map1 - path finder mission, small group dropped behind E lines to secure landing zone
map2 - would love to see air drop animation ala RTCW intro movie (ok, back to earth) was thinking along lines of fighting for a bridgehead, MG map ideal design for that, or Arnhiem(sp?) style city fight - sorry, we havent the facilities to accommodate your surrender sort of thing : )
map3 - fight over a sea port, defend a peir / harbor sort of idea

who knows, itll take the community to make it happen.
