I55 lan 28-31st August

If I was to organise a mini lan tournament for dirty bomb would there be any way for the teams to actually play against each other?

There will be around 3000 people at I55 of which im sure some will be playing dirty bomb. I have had some experience helping to run other tournaments, organising etc so that shouldn’t be a problem.

But dirty bomb currently allow you to host lobbies, without this feature I can not see any way to make this happen.

If it was a local area network I don’t see how anyone could play unless they all live in your house O.o

I55 is a large lan in the UK https://insomniagamingfestival.com/ all 3000 people can play online games at the same time, we usually play dota2 etc which has no offline mode for example.

Oh ok. The more you learn!

(Nail) #5

there are no server binaries available, how are you proposing to play ?

(misspo) #6

To bad SD don’t want to give binaries…it last since day 1 and dev don’t answere.

They have run cups in the past, here are some youtube videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bd0HGYKMtv4 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ud8X1alpLF4 so it must be possible to arrange 5 vs 5 matches in a controlled environment.

(Nail) #8

that’s not LAN, those were run online on a closed server, do you know what LAN means ?

(Ghosthree3) #9

What’s the point if no one’s on 0 ping…

(Black_Bob) #10

We have to play the dota2 competition online, we have to play most lan games online now adays! The point is the community meets up and shares some beers!

I have been attending this lan for 6 years this being my 14th time attending, people like new games, Its f2p no barriers to entry and plenty of teams would sign up just to check it out.

But hey ho it was only an idea, if its not feasible we will just play carry on as normal at lan

Ignore Nail, every single one of his posts are like this.

Obviously, it’s technically not played on LAN, and anyone who has attended LANs for the last couple of years will know that a lot of games aren’t even played on LAN because developers seem to be out of touch and don’t add simple stuff like LAN support, demos, and other things that used to be common place for PC games.

But I do think if Dirty Bomb were to be at some kind of major LAN, it would be great exposure for the game. It’s a shame here in the US, there’s not as many major LANs. I definitely think you should do it. It also might be worth trying to get a hold of people at Splash Damage, as they are based in Europe. It would be great for the game.

LAN support would be sweet. I guess companies just don’t want to give out server side executables anymore. Including those within a game client.

They’re not out of touch, at least in this regard and those are not simple things. I don’t know the technical side of LAN so perhaps there’s reasons there but either way it’s not as popular as it once was and requires additional testing and development time, I have to imagine it’s not a significant amount for either but still.

As for demos well sadly they’re not actually that good for business, I wish there were more too.

how silly of me to expect LAN meant Local Area network when it now somehow means internet, that’ll teach me to go to an actual school

(Black_Bob) #15

Yep lans have changed lots over the year, you dont play many games vs other people at the lan but play games online due to the lack of lan support.

Usually our group of friends generally drag our pc’s hundreds miles (from multiple different countries) set them up only to spend a mere few hours playing on them, the rest of the time thur - mon is usually spent drinking and catching up!

One thing lan is good for though is exposing new games to teams/communities since everyone is in one place at one time people will give it a go.

It’s BYOC. No one’s going to bother with a BYOC.
