I would recommend reading through the new players forum threads and watch YouTube videos of trick jumps on maps to learn how to move around more effectively. Other then that, play the game and save your credits, when you are ready to buy a new merc ask in here and we can help you choose 
You just need gameplay hours to get to know the game mechanics, mercs and maps. The updated tutorial isn’t bad nor is the new assault course so I recommend doing them multiple times. Don’t spend your credits on trade ups or on loadouts just yet. Without gameplay hours you won’t know which perks you will need and also you could get some bronzes from equipment cases while you’re saving your credits for mercs. Don’t ditch the hard daily missions. Do them all so in the near future you can be an effective killer, healer and objective specialist. Pressing “v 2 1” calls for a medic and ‘‘v 2 2’’ for ammo. After someone helps you with those be sure to press “v 4 3” to let them know you’re grateful. Pressing “tab” and navigating your mouse onto a rude players name you can mute them if they’re giving you a hard time.
Oh, and the most important tip - crouching multiple times after getting a kill activates your taunt. So be sure to teabag often

Just watch videos of what other players do, notably the better players. Amerika does full game videos sometimes, and there’s always tournament games you can watch.
Also, you don’t really specify what you want help with? There’s 4 types of mercenary and they all have very different skillsets outside of their basic gun play.
At least until you are level 8 or so. Get used to the game before you do.

My best piece of advice is this: For your first new merc, get an Engineer. I recommend Bushwhacker because in my opinion he is the most newb friendly.

Where can i read up on the different roles? Also their duties and composition requirements if any in a team.
Medics provides health and fast revives. Aura, Sawbonez, Sparks and Phoenix.
Fire Supports provides area denial via lots of fire power and ammo. Skyhammer, Arty, Stoker and Kira.
Engineers complete objectives much faster. Fletcher, Bushwacker, Proxy and soon-to-be-added Turtle.
Assaults kill enemies easier. Fragger, Nader, Thunder and Rhino.
Recons spot enemies which marks them on your HUD and minimap. They have a tendency to use snipers. Aimee, Red Eye, Vassili and Phantom.
Phantom is an assault class, no matter whoever says different, including the game and the devs, PHANTOM IS AN ASSAULT CLASS
@TheRyderShotgun Phantom really is. I was hoping that instead of this EMP thing that is OP they would give him some kind of tagging device that he could stick to enemies and keep them spotted until they respawned / got healed.
