Read a lot of mixed reviews on Brink but still fancied giving it a go.

Have to say I’m very impressed.

Here’s what I like:

 • Varied missions
 • Excellent level design
 • Class system
 • Turrets and healing
 • Buffing team mates
 • Team work

I’ll not go over the negatives but wow - some reviewers have been too hard on this game. It’s unique, innovative and a lot of fun.
By varied missions do you mean run up to an object and press/hold x?
By excellent level design do you mean spawn camping and only having one major route which makes the map boring.
By teamwork do you mean by moving in a mob and pressing x occasionally?

Rofl.
Fair enough

Bit harsh, but probably a more accurate description than :
Teamwork is everything.
NO boundaries.
Near endless customisation .
Which is what I fell for.

Don’t forget the SMART system. I had a friend buy it on the release day and returned it that week. I was like HUH he always likes team based game Tribes 2, TF2 etc. So last weekend he came over for a LAN and I placed a spare copy on his desk. He was hesitant until we showed him how to SMART move around and use the objective wheel, get his weapon mods and how to work as a team and asking for ammo or weapon buff etc. Well lets say after the first campaign he wanted to keep going and now he will be grabbing a copy for himself again lol. He read all the reviews before he actually played it and was negative from the moment he opened it. But that all changed the moment he learned that the game has more to offer this a NEW IP and he needed to adjust to it. So any experienced players out there wanting more friends playing set it on easy and teach them. They will pick it up within a few rounds and problem solved.
END Line…

Brink is definitely not a "drop straight in " kinda game like TF2 is. Takes a little adjusting but once it clicks it clicks.

I like this game, but I lol when you guys keep sayng this game have a hight learning curve sorry to say D :
Hight learning curve games as an example are the old tfc or quakelive and etc.

Back to topic what I love in brink that you don´t have in other fps:

-The customization, its the 1st fps i´ve played that people don´t look all kinda the same.
-The hight damage count in order to kill or to be killed
-Not camp friendly
-Fast regeneration health
-abilities diversity
-Smart is fun but for me isnt that deep compared to other hight skill movement old school games, but thats a good thing for the masses I supose.

-Thanks to the glitch everyone looks like some random bot.
-No idea what you said.
-It’s spawn kill friendly which has you camp near the spawn.
-That can be viewed either way.
-Most are useless.
-It’s buggy, glitchy and I was expecting more from the SMART

First , if a 1200 point xboxlive game like Section8 can come out with dedicated servers then a game with the backing of Bethesda has no excuses … so im not buying the expense excuse as clearly YOU dont know how much it costs.

And didnt say peer-to-peer wasnt … peer-to-peer is fine IF IT WORKS, clearly with Brink it dosent.
It would seem that Brink pumps out so much net traffic that most average xbox users cant provide enough upstream bandwidth. SD not understanding this is a fail there is no other word for it, not identifying it in testing is an epic fail (assuming there was some testing on xboxlive no t just ****ty partner net).

Doesn’t Microsoft have a say over who is allowed to use dedicated servers on Xbox?
If everyone used dedicated servers then they can bypass the whole “Gold membership” thing and play without going through MS’s networks. And then MS doesn’t make any money (and we all know how much MS likes money).

At least that’s what someone once told me. /shrug: anecdotal evidence. If anyone knows the real story please enlighten.

If you compare this game with their previous two titles, W:ET and ETQW, which most people who bought this game were comparing it to, then this game is an utter dissappointment

just sayin

i agree 100%. i have only been in game for 1 month and have logged 200 hrs. i have a shet eating grin on my face every time i play.

my only complaint would be the lack of community in game. well there is none. brink needs a lobby .

this is a qualitative assessment, masquerading as quantitative.

just sayin

i dont think most people who bought this game are comparing it to W:ET and ETQW. maybe most people on here, but even that smacks of qualitative masquerading as quantitative.

just sayin

I left ETQW about 2 years ago and didnt play any online game until brink was released. When I jumped into the game I had a lot of moments like “oh they did listen to the forum feedback from qw!”. Really a lot of stuff in brink is what people where crying for in the old etqw forum (RIP). Especially about being too complex and things like that. Somehow funny that it completely turned around this time.
First off, you are downplaying a lot. Using the TF2 and Battlefield as an example, practically everything is different. The way cl;asses operate, the weapons and weapon handling, the speed of both games, etc. The only real skills tat translate across both games, is aiming and response time.

Secondly, not everyone is a “Serious gamer.” What about the rest of the players? They don’t count?. What constitutes a “Serious gamer” anyway? Do you need to play at least 8 hours everyday? Do you need to have had played competitively in a league or tournament at least one time? Do you need to understand not only how to play games, but the fundamentals of game design as well?

And finally, Brink’s learning curve is quite big, especially if you have no prior experience with SD style games. Prior SD fans are predominately PC gamers since SD games were PC only games, meaning the “SD style” of gameplay is/was catered to the PC community, and the formula was pretty exclusive to PC only. It was also huge in the competitive community as well.

Along comes Brink - a game that features the same PC gameplay, but reconstructed to work in a multi-platform environment, and be more console and casual friendly - It’s taking big ideas, and trying to water them down. Like trying to adjust quantum physics to be able to teach it to first graders. Add in the fact that SD style of gameplay is kind of old fashioned and clashes with the instant gratification formula that many popular games follow today, and this can create a lot of confusion and frustration to players.

DVD’s came out around 1995, and didn’t really catch on until around 99-2000. That’s not really that long ago. You make it seem like I referenced the Phonograph or Abacus.
i remember betamax, 8-track and lazerdisks and have a faily decent collection of 12" vinyl (but i used to DJ so some arent that old). can i get an old phart badge too, before someone comes and takes me for a bed bath!

(Smoochy) #39

oddly i find TF2 anything but user friendly and a drop-in game. so many options that you dont get when you first play. i bought it a year ago and havent even had an hours play yet. games last about 1 minute. maybe im doing something wrong but i find brink far easier to get into.

(vbl) #40

Sorry, but this game is incomplete and sloppy. People are right in bashing it. I gave it 5/10 on metacritic and it’s a fair rating, especially given the price tag.

Section 8: Prejudice, to make a contemporary comparison, is much cheaper but far more polished and complete.
