I recently released BRINKKIT - a config tool. Check it out.

(erode) #1

Hey guys. I wanted to do a little programming exercise so I took up the task of creating another config tool that is easier to use, more attractive, and requires less work than the others. I moderate (& designed) the wonderful Brink community on Reddit.com (brink.reddit.com) so I made the tool as the official tool for reddit and they’re digging it. Why not tell the rest of the world?

Original reddit thread

Download Brinkkit Setup

Requirements:
Windows XP or 7 with .NET Framework 4 Client Profile

Features:

[ul]
[li]Free. Obviously! But if you want to donate to me personally for whatever reason, send me a PayPal gift. I accept upvotes just the same.
[/li][li]Actual working cvars. I didn’t add cvars that don’t work or aren’t supported by Brink. I took time to research each cvar, verify the function and test the performance. There are other tools out right now but I was annoyed by data entry and wanted a fun project to give back to the community.
[/li][li]Smart. Automatically detects some things like your GPU’s capable Refresh Rate and your Primary Screen’s aspect ratio. It also does its best to locate your Steam and Game config directories. If it can’t find it, just select them and it’ll be saved for all future uses.
[/li][li]Auto-updating. If a new version gets dropped, you’ll know when you start the application. You don’t need to come back here and re-download the setup.exe ever again. One and done, gents.
[/li][li]Hosted on Amazon so it should always be available and fast. I’ll accept Reddit server jokes here.
[/li][li]Fluid and efficient design. Tab order makes sense. Use keyboard shortcuts to save (ALT+S) test (ALT+P), or exit (ALT+E). Yes, that is right, you can launch the game right from the app and it’ll save your settings before hand.
[/li][li]Fast updating for hardly any effort. See a bug? Message me. I can probably fix & deploy the update within minutes. This game doesn’t wait.
[/li][/ul]
Upcoming Features

[ul]
[li]Multiple profiles.
[/li][li]Exportation and importation of profiles.
[/li][li]Online database of profiles (made by us!) to easily fetch the best config for your system.
[/li][li]Whatever you guys want beyond configuration is possible. There is a Steam login API now so it’s quite possible to begin friends/achievements/servers integration.
[/li][/ul]
FAQ

[ul]
[li]If you have an issue, you can message me directly if you’d like.
[/li][li]Don’t like animations? Click the gear icon and turn em off. They’ll stay off forever thanks to locally stored preferences.
[/li][li]How do I know this is safe? I’ve released fairly popular software before with a strong following (BFBC2 server tool with something like 38,000 unique downloads). If you think something’s fishy, ask to see the source!
[/li][li]Why do I need to install something to change cvars? It’s a safety feature so you know the app is running in a sandbox and cannot make malicious changes. It also allows for safe storage of preferences, and continually updated code.
[/li][/ul]

Gotta say that this is pretty sweet. I’ll check it out.

I’m not much of a programmer but if you need another designer, drop me a line.

You can see some of my work at: http://zeno.biyg.org/~HopeServer/

It’s the site for a game I develop and design.

(3Suns) #3

Looks very slick! I would try it out, but I am gaming on the 360. Good job!

(erode) #4

Shucks! If there were a way to do this for 360 I would totally be on it. Thanks though!

Thanks DemiGod. I may drop you a line, sometimes the creativity dries up and I am left scratching my head with design.

Thanks for the sweet tool man. Using it, Loving it.

Actually only had to use it once. And it made changing the vars so much easier.

I grabbed it mainly for the fact that you added the VOIP volumes, but I used it to recreate my whole autoexec.cfg and renamed my old one.

I hope more people with mics grab it, and I also hope that those who are having FPS issues grab it. It can make finding the best setting easier and more streamlined.

As for the portals command that Crsipy mentioned I have not had issues with it set to default on, or off. And any new game with windows 7, possibly Vista not sure, the audio work is generally done thru your windows control panel. Gotta love OpenAL

(erode) #7

Works especially well for setting your volumes properly. All the people I know had no idea how to properly set the gain on their voip volumes. I figure the sliders with a color-coded decibel indicator makes it pretty obvious what you should set it to.

I wasn’t aware that OpenAL catches your audio settings right from the Windows audio stack. I had heard from people that it was defaulting to stereo on their 5.1/7.1 headsets though, thought I ought to throw it in.

Could you include these cvars next release?

seta r_gamma 1.0
seta r_brightness 1.0
seta r_useHBAO 0/1
seta net_clientLagOMeter 0/1
seta r_swapInterval 0/1
seta ui_showGun 1/0

Especially missing the vsync and showgun ones.

Also would be nice to know and select a path to where it installs the program. Where does it install it to?

(crazyfoolish) #9

Thanks. Is there a way to restore settings to default with this tool?
Thanks

(Deadwalking) #10

Default would be rename autoexec.cfg and brinkconfig.cfg(then you have a backup), restart the game. I havnt noticed it keeping any settings after doing this.

It will however reset everything to default. except your character

Yes, I will add the missing ones in an upcoming update.

HBAO = Ambient Occlusion (which is already there). What’s the clientLagOMeter? I couldn’t figure this out.

It’s a ClickOnce deployment which means you do not install it in “Program Files”. It’s a sandboxed online/offline application. It isn’t mean to be visible to the user, so if you want access to it you need to go digging in the system folders.

User preferences XML: %userprofile%\AppData\Local_r_Brink
Binaries: %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Apps\2.0\gibberish\gibberish
(you can see why it is not meant for users. All versions are stored in case I need to downgrade/upgrade versions programmatically)

Application shortcuts can be found on the Desktop & in the Start Menu > NMFP Software

(erode) #12

I plan on introducing the ability to revert individual settings to their default value in case you are wary of a change you made. Soon.

(Deadwalking) #13

LagOMeter shows a bit of info about net work performance in a graph at the bottom center of screen. It is semi transparent and slightly covers the stance Icon on the HUD.

(Ashog) #14

Oh yeah, forgot

seta r_visDistMult 0.8

I think 0.8 is default.

Also what disturbs me is that once selected the autoexec path, I can’t change the cfg name to smth else anymore. I have my own autoexec and I don’t wanna mess it up with any other program. So I tried to name it smth like brinkkit.cfg and save it but I couldnt.

(Deadwalking) #15

Rename your old autoexec.cfg and use the one created by Brinkkit. After it is saved you should be able to just rename either file.

(king_troll) #16

if you really want people to use it, you should add color names to it before more cvars…

^0->9 infront of text will change the color of the string,

Iw00->08 will add a weapon icon to your name in other idtech4 games

(farnsworth) #17

Hey, nifty tool you made there.

However, i have one question: What is the fast video restart option and what does it do exactly if i switch it on or off?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but i was wondering if it might help with the occasional crash i’m getting where my video-driver crashes and takes the whole game with it.

Colors sound brilliant, but in what ways can it be used? Sounds easy to implement though.

It lets you come back quickly from ALT+TAB. It’s essentially the same as hiting ALT+ENTER. I doubt it’d fix your driver crashing. Let me guess, ATI? Get the 11.5a rc3 from May 16. It’s solid.

(farnsworth) #20

ah, thanks for the info

No, I’m actually on nvidia 460GTX and the crashes seem to be basically what lots of 4xx/5xx owners get, but for me they are not that frequent and gamebreaking than for most of the other guys. Maybe it’s because I’ve got a Phenom II and not the i5/i7, but that’s a bit off topic.
