I need help with a making a sky

(Sci-n-tist) #1

Okay so I think I get the general idea…a sky is made by a large box that has scripting to it to make it appear curved, hence a skybox. So I have read through all of sticky’s threads even the one specifically on skyboxes

(How to make a Skybox Shader??)

but I can’t seem to figure it out. Is there someone who can take me through the development of a sky starting with drawing the brush.

A Skybox just consists of structural brushes surrounding your map, textured with your sky-texture.
The main part of this whole thing is the sky shader. Google for Q3 sky shader tutorials, you’ll find some.
The shader bakes 6 images together (up, down, front, back, left, right) so it gives the illusion of having a circular surrounding.
For creating those skybox images, I suggest you to get Terragen.

EDIT: Open up goldrush.map to see how SD has placed the surrounding skybox-brushes as an example.

You only need that when u want the sides to look different. And when u want that, there was a far more efficient method called skybox entity (if i m right).
For a simple start just select the 6 brushes that are the big box all around your map and texture them with one of the stock-skies of ET (i think radar works, and a battery sky as well… just try them out.
