hey guys,

im new to the site and new to map making( i just got GtkRadiant )

so heres my questions:

(1) where should i save the map?

(2) also, when i try to BSP compile it, it always says error…any help?

thanx in advance.

It seems that you are posting in this thread only 3 mins after your first post?

Mostly it can take a few days before you get an answer. Please don’t post every day in it just to draw attention, rather do that once a week if there’s still no reply.

To give us some help, could you link us to the tutorial you used to make the map? I’d think it should be clear on where to put the map…

Considering the error you get when you compile your map: it’ll probably be a “map leaked”, but please tell us more. We can’t guess what error you get and give you a foolproof solution for it.

lol…i made that second post to see if my sig was workin…lol…sorry

i saved it to desktop as " test! "

when i try to compile with BSP, i click the 3rd option under the BSP window ( Q3Map2: " single test " -vis -fast )
when i cilck that option, this comes up:

Saving map to C:/documents and settings/owner/desktop/test1.xmap
map_SaveFile: C:/documents and settings/owner/desktop/test1.xmap

Seems that the tutorial you are using is not really fit for a beginner, even for Q3 it’s rather vague.

It’s just a sugestion but you might want to try out EB’s leveldesign tutorials. I must say that he has a wide range of topics ranging from beginning level to advanced level. And as a plus, a test map is included to see how it might look when completed.
Instructions are on that page, he even explains where to put the .map file there.

I hope this helps you a little further.

thanks man

where exactly…on that page…is the tutorial…all i see is custom maps he’s made…no directions…

The maps have to be saved in the maps directory.
You have to compile a bsp first before you can run a vis or a light compile.
Suggestion for beginner:
Please use one of the test compiles that includes -bsp

As for compiling, I d always NOT use the compile stuff in radiant but get a compile frontend.
This was discussed in this thread not long ago:
http://www.splashdamage.com/index.php?name=pnPHPbb2&file=viewtopic&t=14819

In it I link to a good site (www.bobdev.com) and give basic settings for a simple but working compile.
This is a link to a q3map2build-tutorial that looks well explained to me:
http://www.shadowspawn.net/beta/quake3_mapping_q3map2build.htm

Why a frontend? Because it gives you a compile-logfile, from which you can copy/paste the error messages etc., no need to type them by hand. Also its easy to use and you can adjust the compiling settings to your needs.

As Nullskillz pointed out: .map files have to be in /etmain/maps, and the .bsp files too.
Iirc I read in an old thread, that spaces in the path might cause trouble, so you might want to check on that too.
