Anyone have any suggestions on specific processors, brands, motherboards etc for individual pieces or if you know a good place to buy a computer let me know please.
I need a new computer...
uhh, difficult to answer as we dont know how much money you want to spend in your new computer…
but in general i would say that the intel processors (core 2 duo/quad) are better than the AMD-processors in many cases
and: i’d not buy less than 2 gig of ram…
but everything else depends on how much your pc may cost…

ffs wtf in the level design area? at least at general…
anyway, any 45nm c2q, any 130$ mobo, auzen xfi prelude, hd3870, water cooling, 2xDDR2 1066 with the lowest possible latency, below ca. 5-5-5-13 will be ok. at 800mhz 3-3-3-10. any seagate 7200.11 sata2 hdd with ncq. maybe 2 at raid for speed? this may be much cheaper than 2300 but still… no point to get any better. for example, ddr3, dual 3870 or 8800 ultra, wd raptor x, et c. would be only a complete waste of money.
personally i will buy an amd phenom (months later, no money atm) system, but when advicing others, i must tell that sadly but the c2s are performing better than the k10s.
Damn, 2300 dollar? If I were you I’d get a pc for half that money (especially if you don’t need a monitor etc) and do something else with the rest…
I bought my pc 2,5 years ago for half that money and it STILL runs most games perfectly on highest settings (ok maybe not crysis but yeah… who cares), imagine what that money could get you now…
well if u buy 2 or 3 9800’s xD then u could get rid of your money fast, and have a KILLER system.
Seriously that would be a mean machine…
cause the card is already 2 cards in 1 and then in SLI omg… drools
uhh! 2300$ is a lot of money!
i’d do the same thing like flippy… all these very expensive parts are not as better as they are more expensive… i think its better to buy a new computer more often than to buy a more expensive one…
in addition, intel plans to release a new platform in a few months. if you want to upgrade your computer for about a year or a year and a half, that will not be possible so easy. if you dont spend all the money now, you can buy another computer, when the new platform is released…
for example, you could buy a computer like this:
intel core 2 quad q9300 (new series, 45nm, quadcore)
geforce 8800gts 512mb
intel x38 chipset mainboard or: nforce 750 sli chipset mainboard
4 gig of ddr2 ram (ddr3 does not have a real advantage…)
power supply about 650 watts (for possibly installed crossfire/sli-sets)
hard drives with maybe a terabyte of space…
thats maybe around 1000$ with a nice case
(i wish i could buy that for me myself! :D)

I built my own computer, and I have to say, its a fun experience, but I had some problems that took me some time to fix, most likely because I didn’t install some things quite exact as they should have been. I would just buy the computer premade and save some time. believe me, having to figure out whats wrong before you can use the thing is a major pain in the ass:S hope this helps.
in parts. premade combos sux. and check my post versus walk on skys second one. (8800 gts? omfg. hard drives without brand and type but with capacity? omfg. he could know how much space he needs but may ask for which one to buy.) oh and things i forgot: dont buy samsung hdd, dont buy samsung or lg optical drive, dont buy asrock mobo, dont buy crappy power supply (check and ask the man where u buy also if its in the case already. dont buy memory with high latency. especially ask for this when buying.)
but as u see everybody agree here that u can get a very good pc much cheaper than 2300 and u shouldnt spend that much on it.
@aaa3: thanks for that nice post. why dont you explain what you dont like in my post…
@acrobat:
i think, it is better to build your own pc if you have some time to inform which parts you exactly want and to install the system… if you dont have time to do that, you have to buy a premade system (of course
) but my experience is, that either the system is not described in full detail (e.g.: the mainboard is not clearly specified, but that is more common with cheaper pcs…) or the system is a bit more expensive than the sum of the used parts…
so its up to you to decide

remember, while all this dual 9800 quad core stuff is great for the e-penis, see if any of the software you use has any need for all that bling, you can easily buy a computer that no one has written software for.
also remember DX10 is a complete fail so far
