I love custom maps but ..

Sorry for being annoying about this feature, but without some sort of URL redirection, the vast majority of servers will never run custom maps. Most players just don’t like to download from websites (having to look up the maps and finding the exact version, etc.) and/or download from the server. Most admins will turn off server downloads of maps and/or mods because it eats up bandwidth and/or lags the server.

It’s very tragic that Quake 3 didn’t have this. There are so many wonderful custom maps out there, yet most were never actually used on servers due to the problems mentioned.

URL redirection - in Doom 3 - would truly fix this issue, so custom maps and mods can be fully utilized. Otherwise, most will just sit at map sites with very few players trying them out.

Thank you for considering this.

I know quite a few people that recommend my quake3 maps and q1 etc at LAN’s all over the world Germany, UK, USA etc, so I dont think thats going to be a problem for anyone here.

PLUS! I dont map for people to only play maps, I map cause I have no life (kidding) no I map for the fun of it cause it just rocks, I’m not bothered about who does and who doesnt, upto them really

But good point you made there.

or players could just stop being lazy =P

yeah, the quake3 download feature sucked, ET did a good job with the http download within game, that would have been nice on engine, but still, mods will come and communitys will get larger, if your 3rd party map is fun, people will play it. seen it happen with many good 3rd party maps.

Unfortunately, they won’t stop being lazy. Most servers won’t run the custom maps because they know players won’t bother to go search and download them. That’s why I feel this URL Redirection is a must for the custom map scene to have a good chance of exposure and to make the game really grow. Anyhow, I’ll stop rambling about it.

Well theres still a chance they add that feature in the patch

There’s also the feeble dream I’m sure we all have that if our maps are good enough, someone will notice them and we’ll get real jobs in the game industry. Not a likely scenario, but it is possible, and has happened (that’s how Willits got into id, I believe).
Plus, it’s also just plain fun. My brother has already given me some strange looks when I started mapping before I finished the SP campaign!
