just a quick question regarding giving out .map files. Do peole think that this is a good idea. The reason i ask is because ive had two request for my .map file and im not sure if i should hand it over or not. Has anyone here ever given out there .map file and had a bad experience? Have you given it out and found it to be a good thing to do?

I think it is a good idea. And if you are afraid that someone would steal it and put their name on it, release it under GNU GPL license and sue them afterwards if they don’t comply with the license.

The reason why I think it is a good idea is quite simple. The mapping process takes a lot of skills and effort. You need to be:

  1. A good architect (layout knowledge/design)
  2. A good artist (textures art, sound art)
  3. A good hacker (to make scripts and figure out how things work)
  4. A good player (you need to understand the gameplay and how it works.)

Making maps isn’t easy (it shouldn’t be) but there should be enough resources available to atleast make it easier. Getting past the first room and finding tutorials for ET wasn’t easy, atleast a few months ago when I started making maps for ET, if people start releasing the .map source code, then maybe this transition would become easier and more people would find this work to be interresting.

Ofcourse there is always the chance that a lot of new maps will be badly designed, but it goes without saying that even though you have figured out 3), it doesn’t mean that you have mastered 1), 2) and 4). And even if you are good at 1) 2) and 4), not being a good hacker may be the obstacle that prevents you from making maps.

I’d love to hear any questions you all may have about the design and construction of Ammo Depot. Also I would be willing to work with any one who could maybe “clean-up” this map. It’s not the best design for frame rate, and contains a few bugs. :disgust:

but none the less I’d help anybody who thinks they have a good idea on how to make the map run, play, better.

keep in mind this was my first map to do with-out a team, and it took a lot of turns, bumps, reading, and learning curves to complete it. I’m still surprised at the result and how many fans it has. I don’t even get to play often due to a 56k connection, I just liked making the place for peole to have fun in.

thanks for playing: :bump:

LOL. Maybe there is no challenge on ripping allready “opensource” map! The map is awesome BTW. i did not have time to check it out properly but it is huge. My radiant is on its knees with this one.

You’ve probably already figured this out, but AFAIK its a shader parameter:
surfaceparm landmine

One of the best bugs in AmmoDepot is the missing water brush in the tunnel. Just spawn as an axis soldier with an MG42 and wait for the allied soldiers to poke their heads into the tunnel.

That would be a good thing!!!, Please help storm !!!
