I’ve searched for a while about that crash when I open limbo, but the only solution people give is how to correctly set mapcoordsmins and mapcoordsmaxs. I’ve done that but I still have the problem of freezing/crashing. thanks
I have set mapcoordsmins and maxs but still crash at limbo
Do you use a fresh / clean install for mapping / maptesting?
I remember some issues with to many pk3 files in the etmain directory.
I’m not on a clean install. I tried taking all the pk3’s that arent part of the game out of the folder though. And it still froze. Would it freeze even if it were in pk3 form? or is that just something about the bsp? or what
try entering your map like this:
/developer 1
/g_gametype 2
/sv_pure 0
/devmap mapname
After it loads… open console and type:
/generatetracemap (THIS IS THE STEP YOU FORGOT)
Then try to open limbo and enter the map.
Oh man yeah I forgot all about that. It wasnt in the tutorial I was using I guess. I havent tried it yet but I’ll post that in once I do
and also I never used /developer 1 … what does that do?
EDIT: I tried it and when I generated the trace map it said “Need valid coords in the world spawn”
my worldspawn values were
Classname Worldspawn
mapcoordsmins -256 256
mapcoordsmaxs 256 -256
I saved it, then did bsp meta, then open ET and typed all those things
… what did I do wrong?
and also when I go back to open the map again after I tried in ET and look at Worldspawn. those mapcoordsmins and mapcoordsmaxs that I had entered have disapeared. its like they dont get saved when I press save and then do a bsp?
Hi vaneem!
Have you ever managed to get an ET map up and running? In other words, have you created a small map before and did you load it and run around inside it?
Are you follwing a specific tutorial? If so, which one is that?
//Loffy
this may seem dumb, but did you use:
key:mapcoordsmins
value:-# #
(then hit enter)
key:mapcoordsmaxs
value:# -#
(then hit enter)
The coordinates MUST be a perfect square.
your map and entities must fall within the mapcoords.
256 -256
-256 256
While that is a perfect square… thats a really small area and probably does not surround your entire map… try hitting the 8 key on the keyboard… then zooming out in the 2d view… make a huge brush that goes beyond all 4 sides of the map area (make sure you are in top view)
and this brush is a perfect square. I think the Q key will show you sizes on the right and bottom of the brush.
Then mouse over the top left corner and look down on the details bar below your texture window… it will show the coordinates for that corner… that is your mapcoordsmins value. enter that in your worldspawn entity and then do the same at the bottom right corner and input that as your mapcoordsmaxs value.
Then delete the brush and compile your map. Generate a tracemap and enter limbo.
this is the tutorial I was following. actually that does cover my whole map, and some. its just a little cube that I was seeing if I could make it work before I spent time making a whole map
um… what are you asking?
and by the way I think I’ve found the root of my problem. I dont know how to solve it though. I think my problem is that my mapcoordsmins and mapcoordsmaxs “arent sticking.” For example, I’ll enter them. but as soon as I close that entity box the things I just entered are not there anymore.
tell me if I’m doing this right.
I push esc to deselect everything. I push N to bring up the entitites. I go to worldspawn and enter the mapcoordsmins and mapcoordsmaxs.
What did I do wrong there that would make the mapcoordsmins and mapcoordsmaxs not “stick.” Do I need to target a brush before I press N? or an entity? or what? Thanks for all the ideas btw
EDIT: I am using 1.5 if that matters
The mapcoordsmins is called a “key”.
The digits are called “value”.
When you enter a key and a value, you must also hit ENTER.
//L.
You should select a brush that is part of the worldspawn entity (it is by default, so creating a new brush and selecting that will do the trick just fine).
Select it, the press N, then enter the key (mapcoordsmins or mapcoordsmaxs), then enter the value, (formatted like [number] [space] [number] , “3852 -4994” (without the " " symbols) for example, then press ENTER and they should stay inside the worldspawn entity, EVEN if you delete the brush you had selected…
(The keys get added to the whole entity of worldspawn, not just a single brush)
I did press ENTER after I entered those keys and values
they just arent there they next time I push N and go to worldspawn
here, I took some screenshots to show my troubles, take a look.

EDIT: I found my own problem. When I would enter the mapcoords it would make a new worldspawn. but by pressing “L” and selecting the worldspawn that was already there (which was every brush altogether) to edit that one, it works now
I can see this is due to you not selecting a part of the worldspawn itself.
To select part of the worldspawn, you need to select a regular brush(shift and click) that does not have any extra settings. IE: a wall or a ceiling will usually suffice.
THEN and only then can you add things to the worldspawn.
Hold this rule true to all map-development: You cannot add settings to any entity without having the entity selected
