I am left wondering....

I may be way off base here, but it is my gut reaction that if SD were to make Brink as “good” as W:ET, it would sell about as well, maybe slightly better than W:ET. By making it a game that can appeal to the average player, and where the average player, despite lacking the twitch skills of the expert/pro’s can find success, then Brink will sell much better and appeal to many more players.

So in the end the question of which is the better game is a purely subjective one, but the right answer could mean a great difference in mass appeal.

W:ET was free, it didn’t “sell” a single copy, hopefully Brink will be recieved as well as W:ET and actually sell copies

That may be his point; SD didn’t sell any copies of W:ET. :stuck_out_tongue:

(tokamak) #44

…so that means SD should do everything in their power to make Brink different from W:ET in order to avoid selling nothing?

(Cankor) #45
W:ET is a completely different game to ET:QW. ET:QW never had the intensity of a hard fought ET match. ETQW had lots of running to get to the objective and ultimately boredom before you even get there. ET with its small maps, close quarters and emphasis on aiming well from the hip turned it into the fast paced and loved game it was. Most great ET games were less than 10 minutes long.

Making Brink half as good as ET will still make it 50 times better than ETQW. How about we take it all the way and make it as good as ET?
Brink brings back smaller maps and as such will be closer to W:ET than ETQW in that respect. But really, iron sites worked fine in ETQW, they were only needed at medium-long distances. I suspect your issue with ETQW was that it wasn’t W:ET2 and because of this you weren’t open minded enough to give it much of a chance.

Brink won’t be W:ET2 either, you can either get over it or you can let another good game pass you by because it isn’t exactly how you think it should be.

(Thundermuffin) #46

It was a joke. Lighten up, chuckle and move along because it wasn’t some hidden “w:et sucks, it shouldn’t be anything like it,” post. You always take things so seriously, and I even made sure to add a playful “:P” to my post so no one would think I was being serious about it; oh well!

Such levity will not be TOLERATED!!

It was my understanding that SD said most in-house testers barely use the iron sights, as hip-firing is plenty effective for most situations except long-range (which is how it should be).

That is how Killzone 2 is and the gameplay is absolutely excellent IMO. Hip-firing for close to medium ranges and iron sights/scopes only reserved for long-ranges as they would be very ineffective at closer distances. Realism be damned, it helped the gameplay flow a lot.

But Nail, he was only JOKING, seriously lighten up.

I think SD would have done well to temp ban the whole forum for April 1st. Seems a lot of high tension and low effort around here of late (and I’m not a part of it so that sucks!).

Request: Badman can we get a trollface smiley?

geez, you’d think a dancing Strogg banana might have shown the seriousness of my post

I may be way off base here…
Never have my words been more apt.

I had been under the mistaken impression that W:ET had not originally been free, my “fail”.

And so the point that I so inelegantly was trying to make was that while SD has always made excellent games, I don’t think the games had the broad appeal that they are going for with Brink, and therefore they need to include some things that the hardcore purists may find distasteful but that us common folk find enjoyable.

(tokamak) #57

I do think that they’re overestimating the pickiness of the mob as well as underestimating their capacity to grow into a game. Take the orange glows on enemies, if they were gone, nobody would notice it and nobody would complain about it. They would simply swallow it.

There are some non-negotiable aspects for the mob, but I think you should be careful with catering to them beyond the few things they require in a game.

(Herandar) #58

I was wondering when you were going to get back on that topic, tokamak. I’m surprised you held out this long, to be honest.

(tokamak) #59

It really fitted the subject.
