hypothetically would you support valves phone number Policy in Dirty bomb hypotheticaly

(Mc1412013) #1

So i was watching a weekly tech show on YouTube, and there was a segment about valves new anti smurf/hack plan that uses your phone number to to try and prevent multiple acts.

Not sure how i feel about this if it was ever added to Dirty Bomb

Wondering what every one else thinks, And how u feel if Splash Damage made this a requirement in Dirty bomb along side Easy Anti cheat

Here is what i wacthed that got me thinking.

If this doesnt go right to the topic fast forward to 00:35:18

Please stay on topic. were not talking about the hosts just the topic of valves phone number system only

Why would you want to get rid of smurfs?

  • that would reduce the playerbase (especially its growth) noticeable even disregarding smurfs

++ that would require a lot of effort for administration to track all those free numbers, barely any company can do that except google, I’m usually able to find a working number at 2nd page of google for most sites requiring a phone

Aren’t smurfs just the same person on a different lower level account? How would that cause the playerbase to stagnate?

Sure, buying SIM cards can bypass the system, but the point of smurfing (and cheating to a certain extent) is to have “fun” while spending minimal effort. All but the most malicious smurfs would bother to go through the effort of getting a new SIM, signing up, THEN playing the game.

However I do agree with you that SD might not have the budget or manpower to undertake such a task.

I’m not even gonna talk about the manpower or other stuff, but when I was a low level, I really didn’t see a huge amount of potential smurfs. I guess it’s just cause the matchmaking system is so bad that you can pretty much do the same in any pub server, not just max level 6.

You need to consider the amount of DB players who don’t actually have a phone. And it’s actually a lot. A lot of my friends who play DB don’t have phones, or at least a plan that would give them a phone number. Needing a phone number just to play the game would mean that a massive amount of people wouldn’t be able to play. And all just to stop a couple smurfs? And really, DB isn’t so bad that most people quit the game because of one or two smurf accounts.
So yes, @Owyn is completely right. While I wouldn’t uninstall the game, and it would reduce the already small number of smurf accounts, it would also make the game unplayable to anyone who doesn’t have a phone. You’d literally be better off making the game cost a dollar or two.

(HammerOfDawn21) #5

This would drastically reduce the number of hackers who do it cause it’s a f2p title.

Almost everybody who is equipped to play DB owns a phone in my country and it’s not a first world country either. Even if they don’t have a personal one, they can tie it to their home phone.

If it was implemented by Valve, SD wouldn’t have to maintain all the data, if Valve offered it as a service to devs on steam, I’m sure many companies would sign on to it.

I would be scared about what Valve would do with my phone number. I mean, I don’t want to recieve shit ad calls on a daily basis. They could sell my phone number to companies or things like that. It would be a good way to get rid of cheaters since being banned means that you pretty much have to change your phone number. But well, I have to give out my phone number, which is not fine.

Yeah, I see your point now. And as @Eox said, privacy could be a severe problem, but unless you’re a hermit nutjob, living off your neighbour’s WiFi (like I am), I’m sure you have loads of social medias and email account(s) which any company can use to spy on you, so giving out a little bit of info to Lord Gaben really seems tame. Still, IF we do get this kind of system implemented, I’d like to see Splash Damage handling my information, since they are the responsible company, and it would be easier to cover every responsibility and data, should any issue crop up from this hypothetical system.

I don’t support the policy in the first place, but mainly because of security and the fact that some people just don’t have phones. If I remember correctly, when creating and setting up an account for Dota 2 or even LoL they want you to provide a phone number. Can’t remember specifically. Honestly, I could care less about smurfs, it’s more the hackers that would be instantly eliminated unless they start buying new sim cards for new accounts. So there’s a plus. Tuurrnip.

(Sithas) #9

I gave up on steam trading because it requires my phone number, and i would give up on dirty bomb if it requires my phone number. The amounts of times companies get hacked and private information becomes public is too damn high. I have zero trust in companies protecting my private information, so i wont give them my phone number,

I take it you guys don’t play CS:GO because that’s not how it works. You can still play the game and ranked MM. You just get put into a different pool of players if you haven’t linked your account with a phone number. Now with that being said, since MM is already sparsely populated, splitting the few people that do actually play MM up like that could cause queue times to increase a few mins.

(Mc1412013) #11

Now that i think about it valve already has my phone number and device id since im using there 2 step log in its a pain in the ass when i want to log in when my phone dies or i change phones but it helps prevent getting hacked. I already had my ea origin acct hacked and had to deal with ea to get it back. Worse part is as soon as i got control of my act back my act was already getting password reset emails because som one was trying to rehack my act. Now its usong googles 2 step log in and a new email to prevent another hack. Well make it harder amy way

You’re right, I haven’t. I just briefly skimmed the video and read the post.
As you said, if DB had a larger population, it wouldn’t really hurt the game, but I’d still be concerned about playing with friends if one didn’t have a phone.

With measures like this, I feel that our privacy is compromised (increasingly). I am part of a generation in which privacy had a deeper meaning, damn, I do not even use WhatsApp and I hardly have facebook.

You could say I’m an “old school” dude.
