hunk_alloc error on some maps

(Zozz) #1

I know how to change the com_hunkmegs setting…so don’t bother explaining that

I’m just curious as to whether or not there’s a way to force people to raise their hunk_megs to something like 128 when they connect to the server.
We’re unable to run quite a few nice maps on our server because everyone keeps getting disconnected due to their hunkmegs is too low and they don’t know how to fix it.

would be great if some mods could (etpro | shrub | etpub) could deal with this problem…

I do not know how to force someone to automatically put the hunkmeg higher
hope they help

Hunkmegs is engine, so mods cannot change that.

I’m also pretty sure hunkmegs needs to be set at game start (not vid_restart or server connect), so it cannot be changed on the fly.

So the moral is, don’t put silly hugantic bloated maps on your server :moo:

We’re not running any maps that won’t run with default com_hunkmegs atm (56). Would like to be able to run maps like den of lions, helmsdeep_b1 and a few others though…but can’t really put them in since about 40-50 people get dropped when the maps load lol.

I think you’re going to have to put up a sticky post in your forums explaining to people how to change their hunkmegs. Otherwise, it just e-Darwinism at work

(Chruker) #6

Do you have any custom media packs on your server? Ie. custom graphics or sounds?

Tried that, unfortunately too many people can’t read or follow directions
Wish SD would release a client update or something raising the com_hunkmegs to around 128 or so.

(SCDS_reyalP) #8

This would have a very negative effect on those with low spec systems.

True. Maybe they could create something in the update that asks if they have > 256mb ram or whatever…if yes then hunkmegs is set to 128, if no then set to 56.

(mortis) #10

It would be better if the installer would autodetect and set hunkmegs at a level appropriate to the computers RAM.

For instance:

Installer detects: Sets hunkegs to:
<128Mb 56MB
129Mb<RAM<192MB 72MB
193Mb<RAM<256 96MB
257+ MB 128MB

Or something like that. I think most computers would have enough overhead to support that. Maybe they could include a “safe mode” installer that boots up all stock just in case.

Sorry to bump this year old post however there are alot of maps out these days that require the Hunkmegs be increased or you get the error.

I would like to make the same request as above.

Could a small patch be made that will increase the default hunkmegs to 128?

Here is a recent survey that includes how much RAM peeps have.

http://www.steampowered.com/status/survey.html

As Mortis posted an autodetect would be best so that the small percentage of people that have less than 256MB RAM wont be left out in the cold.

Actually, you don’t need 128, 76 hunkmegs should be enough for almost all maps out there and really shouldn’t hurt the players with low ram.

I believe this can be built into any of the client mods, but so far, the mod guys aren’t really touching this thing.

(SCDS_reyalP) #13

That is not correct. com_hunkmegs is in the engine, and requires an engine restart to take effect. A new engine release does not seem likely.

The solution is still the same as it was last year… either don’t use bloated maps, or accept that people who cannot figure out how do a basic internet search won’t be able to play on your server.
