It’s the other way around, being a “caulk hull”. What it means is that your map will mostly consist of simple shapes packaging your map with all the details within.

The texture you are looking for is called “caulk”, when editing for W:ET it shows as a white texture whereas it appeared pink in Q3.

Once in-game, the texture will disappear. It is mostly used to put on un-seen faces so that the game doesn’t need to think about showing them.

I think this is what your looking for, I believe Detoeni created this idea.

Its basically the same as using Caulk but you use a different Texture to keep things tidy.

See here…

If your mapping for ET then click on “Radskybox_et Example Map.”

To help expand on kamikazee’s explanation:
[simple terms]
The structural brushes will be used to create a .PRT file during meta compile. The PRT file contains portal information that is used for “line of sight” computation during gameplay(and during other compiles).
Too many structural = bad [/simple terms]
…that is why I think(and many agree) creating a caulk hull and filling it in with detail brushwork is the best mapping technique for Q3 games.
