HUD respawn timer wanted

(Runeforce) #1

Why: so I can selfkill/respawn for tactical purposes (ammo, health, class switching, falling back etc.) at the exact right moment. Something on the hud should warn me when a pending respawn timer is closing in. Enough time so I can react and switch class and selfkill (by keyboard.) Or just a normal timer, so I can plan ahead.

And a word about timers: I love how the ETQW timer is “forgiving” (and find it overall feeling right,) giving you a split second timeframe (after the respawn has been initiated and the timer has been reset) to respawn again (but only by that split second at the start of the timer,) a mechanic that enables you to make it slightly late. And by the same token, I dispise the ET timer for being strict and not including a zero.

+1

I really miss the ETQW spawn wave timer. Loads of time in DB I’ve been running low on ammo, and could really use a well-timed respawn.

(Humate) #3

i concur…

Seems like everyone got his own respawn timer. I agree with lakersforce, we really need a common respawn timer.

(amazinglarry) #5

From my experience so far, there’s a global respawn timer… it just doesn’t seem to be ‘shared knowledge’. Anytime I spawn, I’m spawning with people (usually)…

I’m fully okay with admitting I’ve just had tremendous coincidence though…

I only say this because sometimes my timer has been instant… sometime it has been ~10 seconds. So there seems to be a ticker somewhere.

(Runeforce) #6

I said I need a visible cue for when the timer is nearing respawn time, so I can time my respawns. I never said it necessarily has to be common (but I see how my comparison to previous titles makes it look inferred. I am not really sure how the respawn timer works in DB. It seems common. Most of the time I spawn with players.)

BTW. I really like how I have the option (after getting killed, not by selfkill) to respawn after the timer resets (at any time,) or wait for a medic. There is a great deal of “forgivingness” in the way it works currently.

But it really sucks selfkilling to find out that I just missed the timer (and the “forgivingness” should extend to missing the timer by that split second.)

Well lakersforce, I think you would like to see the same game as me  Or at least all the features in a new one.

Sorry, I was replying to the general replies… not to your original post. Specificlaly “Rex’s” post… but maybe I should have quoted it. Apologies, been drinking many beers.

Edit: ****in A… I did quote thread that… ugh… I need sleep.

To resurrect this topic a bit, not sure if this has been mentioned before but the timer should be removed during warmup. It also always seems to be 12 seconds no matter when I die (even in warmup) with the odd exception - maybe its to discourage infight /kills? I’ve seen no evidence of a team-synced timer, which I think is fairly essential for co-ordinating team pushes etc. I know the HUD is very rough atm but +1 for visible timer + what class you will definately be spawning as next (its blind faith regarding whether you’ve selected soldier2 or not but this has been mentioned a few times already).

(iwound) #10

respawn timer should be visible and between 20-30 secs to allow waves and gaps in defence to stop lemming like behaviour and to allow me to sip my coffee and have a quick smoke and reflect on what i did or about to do. short respawn becomes tiresome and a chore.
also if custom maps become reality both spawn times and map times should be changeable within the map edit.

I see rarely players respawn/selfkill during midgame in DB because you have health regen till 50% and ammo for a gib.
Also there are no captureable forward spawns so you don’t want to fall back, losing time and get all the way to the frontline. The only reason would be switching the class.

(murka) #12

You barely get enough ammo from gibs to compensate for those bullets lost on killing. 50% hp isn’t enough to do anything so selfkill is still a viable option. I use it regularly and have bound it on my mouse for quick access.
